The Roots - The Fire
Artist: The Roots
Featuring: John Legend
Producer: The Roots
Album: How I Got Over
Label: Def Jam
If you’ve been binging on the World Cup this past week like a Lindsay Lohan at an open bar and are a little tired of listening to Shakira sing, The Roots are here to kick off your week with some freshness. Their latest single, The Fire, is masterfully produced (in-house, of course), by lacing together piano keys, John Legend’s always-talented vocals (see previous Roots/Legend collabo Doin’ It Again) and Questlove’s drum work to create the fuel that drives Blackthought’s upbeat lyrical momentum throughout the song. The beat isn’t the only promising part of the track, as Thought does what he does best by delivering his trademark brand of deep and uplifting lyricism: “I realize I’m supposed to reach for the sky, never let somebody try to tell you otherwise.” If this track’s fire left you feeling hot and bothered, be sure to check out their latest project, How I Got Over, out June 22. Now go to bed so you’ll be well rested for that Brazil game you’ve been looking forward to. God I love the World Cup.

Last week, when I commented on the "Doin It Again" feature about The Roots and John Legend recording an entire project together, I had no idea that "The Fire" had been recorded let alone placed on the same album as a new single. Needless to say, in a roundabout way, my request to the musical gods was answered.
Good stuff, I love when people listen to me (even if it didn't go down like that). |

The Roots and John Legend are born to be together. I like both of their tracks together very much. Honestly I can't think of a bad John Legend hook, and this is one of Blackthought's better verses. "How I Got Over" is looking to be one of the best hip-hop albums of the year!

with "The Fire" as the title, I wasn't expecting such a laid-back track. It's good, but I feel duped!

I'm starting to feel like a broken record on these Roots joints. They're all dope, and this is one of their more minimal tracks ever and it still works, but I'm dying for something more uptempo and upbeat. I was hoping they got their super serious, super dark album out of the way with Rising Down.
The Roots always deliver the fire, now I'd like to hear a hot track. |

if any two artists can call a track "the fire" and truly live up to its name its these two artists making a banger collabo.

Consistent great track by The Roots. Easily the best song out of today's song postings. Everything was horrible so it's good to hear whatever The Roots bring to play.

Fire! Its The Roots, and John Legend, what else would you expect from them, not to mention they're together on the same couple tracks. Fire x2. Still can't wait for the new album. That whole thing will be FIRE, no doubt about it!

Absolutely loving this joint right here. If this is what to come from The Roots/John Legend project, that album is going to be incredible.

I liked "Doin it Again" way more than this song, but this is still destined to be a good song with two legendary forces joining together again.
