Ron Artest - Champions (Remix)
Featuring: T-Pain
Producer: Polow Da Don
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: Tru Warier Records
While it may seem like Lebron James is the center of the current free agent frenzy, in truth the NBA is in a state of bedlam because of a different NBA entity; the Los Angeles Lakers. While every team is seemingly running in circles trying to top the Lake Show, Lakers’ small forward Ron Artest is basking in the championship glory with his newly remixed single, Champions (Remix). The production from Polow Da Don boasts the usual qualities - slow, synth and bass heavy sounds; throw in a typically auto-tuned hook from T-Pain and although it it sounds like an overused cliché at times, the song really isn’t that bad. And as for Ron Ron’s rhymes, well, they aren’t as painful as one fear: “I’m so Cassius Clay, I’m Tyson in his prime…I’m Barry Bonds with mine.” I can certainly think of a handful of rappers he could hold his own against. If anything, the song is just another victory lap for Lakers fans, plus a slap in the face to all the haters. And with Phil Jackson coming back? Maybe Ron can get Diddy on next year’s winning single.

I'm surprised at how good Artest actually is as an artist. As Jon Garcia said, Artest can definitely hold his own against the majority of rappers I hear on the radio at least. He has a stay-on-beat flow, and even though the lyrics aren't anything amazing, he still manages to get his point across without sounding corny. Good job artest and congrats on the 'ship

Artest did and said some stupid stuff during the finals, but the image that sticks out the most is his 3-point response to Rondo's 3 in the final minutes of game 7. Closely followed by his buzzer beater earlier in the series.
As far as this track goes, Artest's verses were alright. I've heard better and I've heard worse. It's cool to hear what's going through his head(he's much more articulate on the mic than in interviews). I didn't like T-Pain here. I don't remember the original version, but I was cringing during his singing. He sounded like a woman in labor squealing like that. |

Ron was ALOT better than I expected. Not saying he was amazing or anything, it's just my standards for athletes turned rapers are VERY low. And his vocals seem too quiet on this track especially compared to T-Pain. T-Pain did decent. Something didnt hit the homerun for me though, but he did well.

There's really nothing I don't like about this one. But there's also not a lot that I like about it.

i give credit where credit is due, and although most is given to polow for a sick beat, artest definitely holds his own and i will say this is a banger.

Like the other reviews here, actually fairly surprised at Artest's abilities. That being said, this is nothing special, not terrible but this is nothing great. I completely agree with XuUP here. T-Pain sounds really painful to me in this track. It's too high pitched even for autotune. 2 1/2

There is no "I" in "basketball". There is no "E" in "music". There is, however, a Ron Artest, a redeemed human being who has come full circle, his top priorities restored and his inner demons ultimately vanquished. He proved the Laker doubters wrong where it mattered the most: the courts. Ron banked a Kobe Bryant airball in the Western Conference Finals. He swished the decisive three-point shot in Game 7 of the 2010 Finals against the rivaled Boston Celtics. He has gained the respect of every Laker fan from Los Angeles to Los Alamitos, admitting to his mistakes (bailing out on his team) and stealing the show in a memorable post game interview. What Ron accomplished for the Lakers within one year deserves a standing "O," and that's what makes this Queensbridge native a true champion.
Some of you might have already noticed, that by replacing the letter "E" in his last name "Artest" with the letter "I," you get "Artist." Ron is, without a doubt, a rap "artist" who can stand on his own. He may not be lyrical or in depth as his fellow homies Nas and Mobb Deep, but there's something to be said about his inner self, his heart, the need to be recognized and acknowledged for climbing an insidious mountain complete with obstacles like distractions and misleads. That is what he speaks about in "Champions." He loves the final battle, the dramatic climax, the sweet cherry on top. You know he won't stop, cause he can't stop. That alone, backed by a beat bumping with redemption and a victorious melody, is what makes this a five star. Then, why a three? T-Pain is usually good with hooks, but instead of a memorable chorus, what we have is a victorious crooning beginning on the second half which sounds more like bragging about his win than being appreciative of his goals. The first half of his chorus was what impressed me, because it tied perfectly to "Champions" without abusing the auto-tune. Give me the original chorus over T-Pain's any day. Ron Artest is unaffected by this, because he has already found his center. (Jon Garcia, you might be surprised to learn that Ron has worked with Diddy before. But anyway, check out my podcast Wammy Radio for the original version.) |

THE UNWRITTEN RULES OF HIP HOP WOULD SAY THAT "WE" SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO LIKE THIS RECORD... MAYBE JUST BECAUSE WHO IT'S BY OR THE SITUATION SURROUNDING THIS RECORD, BUT TAKIN' ALL OF THAT OUT OF IT AND JUST LOOKIN' AT IT FROM JUST A "TRACK" PERSPECTIVE THIS IS SOLID. SURE ARTEST ISN'T A LYRICAL GENIUS, BE HE DOESN'T CLAIM TO BE. HE CLEARLY DOES IT FOR FUN AND AS A FAN OF HIP HOP ITSELF AND AT ONE POINT I REMEMBER THAT IS WHAT HIP HOP IS/WAS ABOUT. SIMPLE AUTOTUNE HOOK BY T-PAIN THAT ISN'T AT ALL OVER THE TOP BUT GETS THE JOB DONE AND FITS THE TRACK WELL. I CAN DIG IT.

1) Ron cannot rap.
2) Ron knows he cannot rap. 3) Polow, however, can produce. 4) Teddy can sang. Sorry, Nathan. I know you're still reeling from the C's loss. |

Ronny is the only reason im not completely pissed about the Lakers win. When i heard him mention this song in the post game interview i was scared, but this is much better than expected. Sounds like he should be in dipset on something. 2.5 stars

Am I giving this one star solely because I'm a bitter, hate-filled Celtics fan who's still angry Ron Ron hit that three to put us away? Yes, yes I am. Deal with it.

This wasn't bad tho I think it's hot because of T-Pain more than Ron Artest but he's better than I thought he might be.

Lol surprised @Nathan S. didn't write the review of this song. I was looking forward to hearing another rant about the Lakers and how Paul Pierce is a great basketball player. Anyways, the song is just cockiness at it's best.

T-Pain was annoying on this to me. His hook here is nowhere near as good as his energetic hook on Khaled's "All I Do is Win."
Polow's beat was solid. As for Artest, he was okay, I mean he's an athlete so I wasn't expecting the second-coming of Talib Kweli from him or anything. He was nowhere near as bad as some non-rappers can be. He did seem to lack energy and spirit though, like he was just simply reading the lyrics off of his phone or something. 2/5 |
