Rockie Fresh - What's the Hurry
Artist: Rockie Fresh
Producer: The Cartoonz (The Gift & LPeezy)
Album: Otherside
Label: Maybach Music/Warner Bros.
If patience is a virtue, then hip-hop hopefuls who put in years on the grind for the mere possibility of a shot at the big league must be saints… or lunatics. No pun intended. While first-time featuree Rockie Fresh is still a relatively, well, fresh face, having entered the game in ‘07, he’s been around plenty long enough for the sheer enormity and uncertainty of his undertaking to sink in; on his latest single, the ironically-titled What’s the Hurry, he faces those doubts head-on. The Cartoonz (The Gift & LPeezy) man the boards, flipping a sample from Hide & Seek singer Imogen Heap’s Have You Got It in You into a pensive backdrop for the Windy City native’s reflective rhymes. Despite the toll his work’s taken on his physical and mental, the artist concludes that he has indeed got the right stuff to succeed: “I’m here – tell ‘em this is my year / and n*ggas better stop it ‘cause it’s obvious I got it.” Agree with Rockie’s self-assessment? In addition to grabbing a copy of his latest street album, Otherside, when it drops on December 14, you’ll want to keep it locked to DJBooth for his Exclusive Freestyle Series contribution, coming soon!

I had heard of Rockie Fresh (we share a city), but I had never heard Rockie Fresh (does that make sense?) Thankfully, that all changed last week when I heard "What's The Hurry."
This is a very impressive Booth debut from Fresh, who sounds at home over the dramatic production/sampling, coming across as intelligent, articulate, and pensive in his work. |

Huge props for the unexpected sample, it works perfectly here. And I have to give it up to Rockie as well, those are some real real rhymes. I could have used a slightly stronger flow from him, he gets drowned out by the beat a little, but I'm impressed. Let's hear some more from the man.

I feel the same way about it. Not enough power on such a motivating beat. If I were an up and coming rapper who tuned into the booth, I'd really consider trying for an entry to the freestyle series using this sample. (not sure if that's allowed)

For Rockie this is a banger. It kinda reminded me of Em's "Not Afraid" in that its a testament to not give up. Great sample over a mellow reflective beat.

Could have came a lil harder and stronger on this one!! As said the beat takes away from the lyrics! I do still like this track! Had to listen to it a few times to get the content!

I like the what he's saying. It seems like the right subject matter for this type of track.
