I’m feeling nice today, so I’ll spare you the “Who’s on first?” routine (just this once, though), so let’s just say that this new single, the first Booth feature from up-and-coming singer Rocki Evans, is titledFantastic,” is pretty fantastic

excellent. The latest entry in the “unusually upbeat breakup joint” R&B subgenre, this cut finds production/songwriting duo Lady and a Tramp pairing a compulsively head-noddable swung percussion rhythm with a chopped sample from Jackson 5 classic I Want You Back as the up-and-comer, ironically enough, informs an ex that he doesn’t want her back – as it turns out, life without her is just fine, thank-you-very-much. Topped off with a few rapped bars from Kanye West (originally found on Brandy’s Talk About Our Love), the record has an undeniably catchy vibe, but is it truly, um, superb? If you think so, you’ll be able to hear Fantastic and plenty more songs about girls on Rocki Evans’ aptly-named More Songs About Girls LP, due out next Tuesday, April 6.

This song first appeared on the R&B / Pop Chart on April 5, 2010

lol another sample...still on protest...don't get me wrong i love samples in music but this is all you guys feature and that can become a problem especially when me, nathan and z are usually the only ones that comment on the independent artist...this is not bad but its doesn't give me that wow feeling but i encourage dude to give me a banger...pretty bad engineering they should probally trying panning and dropping some levels...he shouldn't have took kanye's bars off and put on his own to me this shows laziness...he isn't a great singer he just can sing he should have held some weight on some background vocals and did more better with the hook harmonies...to mellow sorry!! not exciting and i love r&B this is not garbage just can't catch my eye and i believe the beat overshadows his vocals

This works so well as a summer radio song; it's light, relaxing, and smooth. I was on the fence about his use of Kanye's verse from Brandy's "Talk About Our Love," but it fits.

So I was listening to Teddy P’s Bad Luck yesterday dying for something like this [Fantastic] record from our generation. Alas, how refreshing it is to have some “feel good” music back in R&B. I absolutely refuse to be jaded by glamorized hip hop and adolescent R&B. Props: maintaining artistic vision is about always doing what feels good. You can make the blues feel good! Eager to hear you on Tuesday.

Can’t be mad at a J5 nod! This dude is to “I Want You Back” as Mario was to “Just a Friend” back in 2002. Why choose?

I really love the production on this record. The Kanye sample, not so much. Evans definitely has a good voice though. He sounds like a young "Novel" to me.

I'm not sure I understand the need to place Kanye's a capella vocals from an old Brandy track on this fresh new single, but it has me talking about Rocki so I guess job well done?

Aside from the random non-guest guest feature, this was really fresh. Mr. Evans you are on my radar, sir.

This would have been fine without the Kanye 8. Nice Introduction.

Got no complaints. Verse wasn't actually needed but it fits well with the vibe. Very listenable song, if only for the smooth sun-baked groove of the instrumental. Need more!

The Jackson 5 Rock'n'Roll sample sounds more celtic here. Good job.
