Robbie Casablanca - Hello Forever
Artist: Robbie Casablanca
Producer: Andrew "Pop" Wansel and Oak
Album: #NoTurbulence
Label: Private Stock Ent./Goooooooo Music
I like weird, far-out sounds as much as the next guy – maybe more, depending on the ‘next guy’ – but damn, do artists like Robbie Casablanca make my job difficult. Simply put, if there’s a neat label that describes what the Philly-based newcomer is doing on his latest single, I don’t know of it. As best I can describe it, Hello Forever is a nightmarish collision of rap and rock – not nightmarish like Weezy‘s Rebirth, which was just bad, but in the sense that it’s actually kinda terrifying. Andrew “Pop” Wansel and Oak (the beatsmiths behind Trey Songz’ Unusual) man the boards, cooking up a claustrophobic mix of dissonant guitar riffs (from Hendrix classic Purple Haze), skittering synths, frenetic percussion and reverb-drenched howls. Casablanca comes with rhymes to match, lacing the beat with a dense, diabolical brand of braggadocio: “Motherf*cker shoulda run in the first place / Heavy in the game, I walk and cause earthquakes / and I’m so insane in the worst way / One of my thoughts could make the whole Earth shake.” If this unhinged selection’s piqued your interest, more is on its way; Casablanca’s latest mixtape, #NoTurbulence, drops June 20.

It took me a few listens and I am still not sure what kind of artist Mr. Casablanca wants to be associated with (what lane does he plan to drive down, is the proper question)? His style, as Richard struggled to pinpoint, is unique enough to lay off the comparisons. The key, for me, is to hear more...

This is one of those "weird" meaning "good" moments. It's definitely different, but in a good way. I wanna see what else he can come up with tho...

This song reminded me so much of Roman's Revenge. The production and rage in his voice would have made a superb Roman's Revenge 3.0.
Anyway, I like, he definately left a mark. |

I think im feeling this, although I'm not really sure. He has some witty lines, but it feels a little to cluttered. Despite the jumbled sound, somehow Casablanca makes it work. I like his flow and it sounds good behind the Purple Haze flip, but i could have done without the sirens and extra noises. I respect him for being different, but I would like to hear what he can do over a more traditional type of beat.
