Rico Love - Wanna Hear U Say
Artist: Rico Love
Producer: Rico Love, Earl & E
Album: 42nd Street LP
Label: Division 1/Universal Motown
How long has it been since we’ve featured a headlining track from singer/producer/songwriter Rico Love? So long that at the time our esteemed DJ Z was just an aspiring radio DJ interviewing Rico with his partner Caliente. (Otherwise known as 2007.) But after an extended solo hiatus Mr. Love has decided to once again step into the spotlight and begin leaking some of the music he’s got stored in his vaults, beginning with new record Wanna Hear U Say. Both in terms of production and vocals Wanna Hear is classically understated R&B, with producers Earl & E joining Rico behind the boards to craft a lightly humming, silk sheets ready beat. Some vocalists might be tempted to oversing with such mellow backing, but thankfully Love holds back, delivering the kind of breathy, romantically inclined verses the song calls for. Fans overjoyed to have some Rico back in their lives will be happy to hear me say that Love’s got an eight song project, the 42nd Street LP, dropping soon and featuring his Division1 artists Young Chris, Cherlise, Sofi Green and Emjay.

I enjoyed this one, Rico kept my attention without being over aggressive in singing and I liked the minimal approach with the approach. This will be a late night banger.

The production, arrangement, melody, and structure were all on point and top shelf. The vocal performance, however, left a little bit to be desired. Its good to hear from Rico regardless, though, and I am encouraged to find out he is planning to release older, never-before-heard material from most of the past decade.

Doesn't sound bad, but it's just another song. Sounds kinda like some old Marques Houston...

This reminds me a little of The Weeknd. It's not bad, but not great either. Smooth, relaxed vibe, but the vocals aren't great, and it brings the song down. It's ok nonetheless
