Though countless artists have sought to “bring hip-hop back to its roots,” no mainstream act has been able to embody the genre’s late-80’s sound… until now.  Eight New York City youngsters (Sur Fresh-A-Lot, Ms. Phenomenon, Kool Kidd, Lucky, Skytell 88, Joe Ski, Ill Will, and J-Smooth), ranging in age from 18 to 22,  have come together to form the Retro Kidz.  One listen to their debut single, New Era, and you might suspect that the group was recently thawed out after spending 18 years cryogenically frozen. Their secret? Re-live the hip-hop culture on a daily basis.  It’s worth noting, however, that all producer Armand Van Helden did on the track was snatch up the bassline from Snap!’s urban-electronic pop smash, The Power.  For more old-school sounds with new-school appeal, hop into the DeLorean and take a ride Back to the Future this fall.

Well they are bringing back an old beat. So lets set that aside. The Chorus needs some work. But the lyrics are iffy. Just average. Nothing impressing. Its just...okay. Wouldn't listen to this song again

I just got hyped by hearing this old school beat. I just want to scream "I WILL ATTACK, AND YOU DON'T WANT THAT!" I wonder if the group will use old beats for all their songs.

I don't dig their look. Retro @*#$! is just corney when it doesn't have a new spin on it. Ya just completly bitin another generations swagger. I can't dig that. Spin it mfZ! Put ya own style into it, be creative. This has already been done. Just LazY!

Yeah, it's definitely a retro kids era, and I don't know if I exactly feel it completely. The Cool Kids kind of spoiled me on it. I mean, I loved when they came out, but then everyone else started coming out like it, and it just wasn't as authentic than ACTUAL RETRO HIP HOP that I can just easily go back and listen to. But I definitely feel the retro production from Armand Van Helden. I agree with BDF44. I think an original spin on retro-rebirth should be in order. Maybe that's why I can't completely rock with it, even though I love the early 90s and the 80s music generation. Oh, and is it just me, or am I the only one who thinks that girl in the picture looks out of place. She looks too 2008 to be in the Retro Kids. LOL. Looking all life Karina Pasian or Tiffany Evans and what not. This still was mad fresh, but I just don't know how long this fad of retro-rebirth will last, unless they come up with something else interesting to attach with it that will make it more like a new style that also gives homage.

I grew up in the 80's listening to hip hop but I don't find myself listening to any of my fatboys, run dmc, dana dane or dougie fresh cassettes that much. I appreciate the old skool but I really don't enjoy listening to it anymore. I don't think this group will go very far with this retro style personally.

I'm not mad at all, aye. Kids are putting it down for the older style tracks that are rare these days. Nice track all together, but the NY-esque beat is the highlight, which has some "retro" (couldn't think of a better term" squeezed over it.

The beat of this song is very similar to the beat of Snap's The Power Of Bhangra...no joke, they are almost the same! I feel more The Power Of Bhangra, though. This is ok

OMG I didn't read the intro of this song with much attention...sorry M. Burmy! Well so I was right, the beat is that from The Power Of Bhangra...but this is a bad copy in my opinion, Snap managed to do it better

Okay... if you don't like this song, then you either a) hate anyone who samples hit records (thanks for re-reading Patty), or b) were not born pre mid-80's. It's that simple. If you are a late 80's or 90's baby, I suggest doing some homework... OR... you could pick up a compilation CD, entitled "Jock Jams." That should help.

WOW I live in NYC and I see them all the time around SOHO but never thought they would be trying to drop an album...just pictured them as group that liked to dress 80's and not rap group. for what its worth track could be a lot worse, think the main thing saving this song is the beat
