REKS - Pray for You (The Homicide Note)
Artist: REKS
Producer: Statik Selektah
Album: In Between the Lines (Vol. 2)
Label: Gracie Productions
As we learned from his recent video interview with DJ Z, in everyday conversation, REKS is one chill dude. Not that that should come as a surprise – how could anyone who habitually cut records as blistering as new mixtape leak Pray for You (The Homicide Note) have any stress or aggression left for daily life? Boston neighbor Statik Selektah mans the boards, serving up an ominous synth-vocal instrumental (complete with a Chappelle-sampled intro and a hook drawn from Hova‘s Dead Presidents 2) as REKS rattles off all the things that have been pissing him off lately, including (deep breath) Obama’s arguable inability to create real change, MC Solar’s actions surrounding Guru’s death, hip-hop’s rampant materialism, wack rappers, skinny jeans, wack rappers in skinny jeans… and so on. It ain’t all negativity, though; he also gives props to those who deserve ‘em: “F*ck with me, f*ck with Gibbs, f*ck with Pill… the South, y’all killin’ rap still.” Does this cathartic banger leave you craving more? Seek and you shall find: the artist’s Booth-sponsored In Between The Lines (Vol. 2) hits our mixtape page late this month.

As long as you aren't quick to label REKS as a hip hop version of "Debbie Downer," you should find plenty to like about "Pray For You." I understand the need for positivity, but I like REKS locked into a zone where he is mad at the industry, our government, and the world. Backed by Statik's work here, he is a winner.

^mHester '08? Take it from someone who grew up in Boston listening to 88.9 and watching REKS rock the stage at the House of Blues, the man's been killing mics like this for a long, long time. The man's been on a mission lately, and I'm loving his willingness to name names. There's no way you can knock that kind of unfiltered truth.

And that's exactly why I love Reks.
I agree with everything he said, especially that the south is killing hip-hop, still. MC Solar is to blame (I read the letter too), and I want to bring back the revolution, Chuck D’s evolution, and yes BIG’s King. P.S. How come you guys didn’t feature Settin It Off? R.I.P. Guru |

Another reason why I love this track is because it will never be played on a FM radio station.
