Reflection Eternal - Midnight Hour
Artist: Reflection Eternal
Featuring: Estelle
Producer: Hi-Tek
Album: Revolutions Per Minute
Label: Blacksmith Records/Warner Bros.
According to numerous songs over the decades, not many good things happen at midnight: corpses come out of the ground (Thriller), the freaks come out (thanks for letting us know, Whodini), and that’s just the start. However, there might be one good thing that happens when the clocks strikes twelve, at least on the latest single Midnight Hour from Reflection Eternal (rapper Talib Kweli and producer Hi-Tek). Over an upbeat, jazzy, minimally techno rhythm from Tek, Talib shows us a little bit of his cocky side while guest singer Estelle tells us that “it’s on” when she gets home. Whatever “it” is - playing checkers, having a pleasant conversation, perhaps - it must be pretty exciting. Ironically, Estelle is the track’s sole imperfection; without much range and a few pitchy notes, her voice doesn’t seem to suit the flow behind it. Replace her with Jill Scott or Chrisette Michele and this would have been flawless. But as is, it’s still damn good. Stay tuned for the release of Reflection Eternal’s upcoming album Revolutions Per Minute, due out May 18.

yea dis is for the grown and sexy, i wouldn't expect the younger age to understand this type of music...especially if you wasn't raised on the temptation age...anyway this is is a good song...won't be a big single for them...so sad but this is a head nodder...the hook is great...and hi-tek is so underrated i wish they would get some great promotion...this is a banger!!!

@jbuntyn90 - A 1? Really? How many songs a day do you listen to at DJBooth.net? And this is a 1-rated song? C'mon, man.
Love the bounce of Tek's production. Talib's flow is versatile enough to sound at home on the song and Estelle was a good fit for the hook vocals with her appeal to the club. I hear what Matt is saying about Jill Scott or Ms. Michele, but that would make the record appeal towards a whole different demo - Urban AC. They are trying to skew this younger. |

I wish I loved this a little but more, but I couldn't get quite as into it as I wanted. I think it's because while Kweli's a legendary emcee, his weakness is smooth flows like this - he tends to spit in a similar cadence everytime. Still better than almost all the other hot garbage on radio right now.

This is the freshest I’ve heard Estelle sound in a while; her new song is to wack (Freak). However I think Kweli dumbs his verse down a bit, I think they were looking for a more mass appeal with this song.

Thing is I've listen to this song about 4 times and it still just ain't getting me as much as I would like it to. I expect more from Talib n Hi-Tek. It's aight but just nothing that stands out for me...it's actually a little boring.

This is decent, sound like a number from a broadway grease play or something, not a fan of this but i respect it.

i was hoping estelle's performance wouldnt flop like i felt her last booth feature did and my wish was granted fortunately. the beat definitely had that broadway feel like the 149th said and it was infectious, estelle was nice and while talib wasnt as strong as usual i cant hate on him

It's by no means the best single Reflection Eternal have ever done. However, the fact they have released "Midnight Hour" to coincide with their singles collection is something to be celebrated, simply because it's a wonderful change of pace from whatever is ruling the radio stations, and adds variety to their catalog.

Got huge respect for this track, production was great, flow was krazy, but I just couldn't get FULLY into it, I think it was the hook?
