Redman - Lights, Camera, Action
Artist: Redman
Producer: Rockwilder
Album: Reggie
Label: Gillahouse/Def Jam
Redman has been that something that’s been missing from hip-hop lately; goofy, dope punch lines with a resonating voice and flow to accompany it. With the Funk Docta Spoc’s new album on its way, the weed-smoking, rap-loving world is ready to welcome back one of its favorite emcees to the scene. On the emcee’s latest album leak, entitled Lights, Camera, Action, Redman showcases battle-ready bars to an army of eager fans. However, the comic vibe that one might expect is almost completely missing, as Red speaks largely on political issues (seriously!). Don’t be confused though - he still throws in a couple of nasty one-liners: “Yeah I know Bush may be our President, one tough act to follow/ Watch the Lewinsky’s, who just wanna swallow.” The production is very catchy as well, as longtime collaborator Rockwilder implements rising synth grooves that only propel Red’s rhymes to higher levels. Trust me, this is going to be one cut that will only grow on you. For more material just like Lights, Camera, be sure to look out for the long-delayed, kind of self-titled Reggie, out December 7.

Rockwilder has always done good by Redman (and Red and Meth, for that matter), so when I found out that he produced "Lights, Camera, Action" I knew we had some musical crack on our hands. Lyrically, Red comes with a politics vibe I didn't expect (especially for a song with this title), but it isn't awkward or unusual. It works, if you let it.

Nothing special on the vocal-side, but Rockwilder always comes with dope production, and he doesn't disappoint here. Stole the show for me.
Don't mind this, but it ain't going on my iPod. |

I really want to support Red tackling more serious topics, but most of his recent material has seemed to lack that trademark energy and inspiration, and this isn't much different. Hopefully "Reggie" will have more of that spark.

Im liking what Redman did in this. He went hard with the subject in his verses. The song has a great flow and a smooth energy. Im not feeling the production from Rockwilder tho.... But i have to admit, the chorus is very catchy. A good overall song. In rotation for me.
