I was going to kick this blurb off by referencing the popular idea that the gene for red hair is doomed to extinction in the next century or so, but apparently the studies in question are very likely to be bogus. And Redhead is not actually a redhead. The D.C. native is, however, a member of another breed that many, probably incorrectly, believe to be dying out: the gifted emcee. Contrived intro aside, newly-leaked mixtape cut Beasties finds the Booth newcomer killing two birds with one stone, paying tribute to one of the most revered (and funniest) hip-hop groups of all time and making sure everyone knows that he’s “headed to the top” of the music game. Over Elijah the Thief‘s head-nodding, retro-informed boardwork, Redhead combines an engaging, Beastie-esque delivery with his own brand of off-the-cuff braggadocio. Like what you’re hearing? You’re in luck – this is just one of the 17 Random Things Redhead shares on his latest mixtape, available now online.

As a longtime fan of the Beastie Boys (when you grew up in the burbs in the 90s, they were the "accepted" hip hop in the household), I must say that Redhead does the legendary trio justice. His chaotic energy and flow is a dead on match and the vibe of the song has the same exuberance as a Beastie Boys cut. Impressed.

It's a shame more rappers don't use more Beastie Boys references, lord knows they gave us enough material to fill punchlines for days. Not sure about Redhead's flow there, it's either a little annoying or uniquely cool. Honestly I'm gonna have to listen to more from the man before I make up my mind. Let's hear more!

A nice combination of banging beat and clever rhymes with an ear for true-school hip-hop, creating a dope overall sound. Rotation fa sho!

I feel that Redhead has serious potential. His signature voice, production choice and image is all him. It is, however, an acquired taste. This track is one that I can feel, because he is letting the beast out and paying homage to the Beastie Boys. I gotta give it to him.

I think Erica L. brings up a good point. This is sort of an acquired taste, but I dug the energy and some of his lines. Nice tribute to the Beastie Boys.
