REi - Cali
Artist: REi
Producer: Varsity Team
Album: The Regeneration Mixtape
Label: Nzone Entertainment
Newly-signed to DJ Toomp‘s Nzone Ent, New Orleans up-and-comer RE (pronounced phonetically, not as an acronym) has stepped into the Booth to introduce himself with a track as appetizing as Willy Wonka’s lickable wallpaper – and much more sanitary. While mixtape leak Cali doesn’t seem to have much to do with snozberries or the Golden State, it’s hard to care once the track kicks into high gear; production crew Varsity Team deliver an adrenaline-pumping instrumental driven by breakneck percussion and brass fanfare while RE comes with rhymes to match, showing off his high-energy flows as he fills us in on just how much he’s enjoying the fruits of his labors: I’m actin’ like a n*gga who ain’t ever had sh*t / cause, duh, I ain’t ever had sh*t.” In a game where more and more artists are grappling with the dark side of success, it’s nice to see someone’s having a good time – what do you think, Booth readers? For more upbeat jams, check out RE’s Regeneration Mixtape, released May 11 and available now online.

All hail King RE! No, seriously, how bad ass were those trumpets the Varsity Squad kicked into high gear behind the rhymes? Like I've said on a few other features tonight, I have nothing bad to say about this one. Upbeat, fun, dope lines.
Looking forward to much much more from RE (whose stage name makes it impossible to Google correctly). |

Ha! I wasn't expecting that Willy Wonka sample, but it worked. This is another pretty good song from today's feature's that make me want to check out the artist's mixtape.

We got some nice features on the Booth tonight. His fast paced flow is nice and the production is nice. Solid song...I can see this getting some spin.

The production wins it for me. After one listen I'm confused on the willy wonka, I'm sure I'll get it after more. SOngs really ADD for me slow fast slow fast, but it gets very upbeat and that's what I really like from it. Okay the horns make it a 4 star production.

"Augustus, stop eating your hand."
"But mother, I taste delicious!" I've probably seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 50 times, and just like Willy Wonka RE's creative energy is crazy. I don't know about the hook (Cudi's got everyone thinking they can sing), but the beat's big band feel and RE's verses are pistachios. Dopeness. |

Haha the opening intro sounded really awkward, but RE made up for it. Comes with plenty of energy and really puts this beat in it's place. I'm not the biggest fan of the production when it slows down, but when all the instrumentals kick in, I have no choice but to nod my head.
RE probably will blow up at some point in time, however, I don't think this track will be the hit to make that happen. In rotation. |

I liked the intro. The production is nice and his rapping is uptempo. Nice, but not my type of song.

Its a mix-match for me. The hook doesn't keep up with the umptempo production, RE does his part on the track, but the sleepy hook really drags this down for me.

RE’s rapping is assertive and keeps the song going despite the variation in arrangement (on hook). And thankfully, the song doesn't get repetitive (like half of the songs featured today) and ends at an appropriate length. But what caught my attention the most was the production. It really keeps you on your toes even with a sudden break in tempo. Rotation fa sho!

wow im loving the trumpets, such energy is infectious! varsity squad get props for that. re's flow during the verses is really good but my only criticism is the hook which fails to replicate that energy present throughout the rest of the track. 3.5 but ill round up
