Razah - Heartbreaker of the Year
Artist: Razah
Featuring: Sheek Louch
Producer: Streetrunner
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: Just Us Music Group
There are still nearly four months left in 2010 but, as far as Razah‘s concerned, his ex-girl’s already earned the title of “Heartbreaker of the Year.” Fresh off the kinda-‘eh’ Booth reception of I Remember, which suffered from a shared sample with Nicki Minaj’ Your Love, the ex-Def Jam signee goes a more classically soulful direction this time around, pouring out his heart over Streetrunner‘s old-school sample work (likely borrowed from R&B vet Denise LaSalle’s record of the same name). Guest duties fall to D-Block veteran Sheek Louch, who laces the front and back ends with some of the most vividly fresh breakup-themed rhymes I’ve heard since Ghostdini: “Went from jewelry and lobster tails / to ‘I hate you Sheek Louch’s and ‘F- you’ Emails.” It all adds up to an eminently ear-pleasing collision of hip-hop and soul – but is it pop-appealing enough to get Razah some label attention, and ultimately win his yet-untitled freshman full-length a solid release date? That’s for Booth readers to discuss, and all of us to find out.

Razah's vocal contributions are always earnest, never over-the-top, and appropriate (in regard to the accompanying production). Simply put, he knows what is working with vocally. At first glance, I assumed Louch wouldn't be a good look for the R&B crooner's record, but his hard bars and tone actually mesh quite well with the throwback nature of SR's beat.

He got me in the door with the soul sample, and then once I was inside I found myself enjoying myself. Sheek's delivery is so aggressive I don't think it really works here, but otherwise this is a nice, smooth pop-r&b joint.

Is it me or does something sound off in the mix of Razah's vocals? Overall, a good addition to Razah's Booth catalog. Louch sounds great on this.
