With the release of the Dilated Peoples member’s first solo full-length on the horizon, you’d think Rakaa Iriscience would be feeling on top of the world (if a little nervous, maybe). Apparently, you’d be wrong. Rather than patting himself on the back and taking a well-deserved victory lap, the Los Angeles mainstay slips on his Crown of Thorns and invites us to join him in his darkest hour on the LP’s newly-leaked title track. Over a synth-sizzling, Sid Roams-produced beat that positively drips with foreboding, the artist spits three verses packed with somber reflections on life, the streets and the music game. Though the overall mood is brooding, Rakaa ends on an affirmative note: “F*ck the rumors, Dilated got it on lock still.” I Need a Dollar singer Aloe Blacc echoes the headliner’s steely resolve on the chorus, crooning “I never thought that life was gonna be this way, but every battle I fight makes me stronger every day.” Fans of Rakaa can find this cathartic banger and, presumably, some lighter fare on his debut solo set, scheduled to hit stores and online retailers July 20, via Decon Records.

The production on this is sweet. Rakaa had a nice flow on the beat. Aloe Blacc's vocals were very smooth and on point. Had some soul in it.

I'm a longtime fan of DP, so there was a good chance (full disclosure here) this record was getting high marks and a 4 rating without even being heard. However, since I believe in professionalism and objectivity, I did listen. Same story, though.

Nice production. Not my cup of tea overall though.

I'm a fan of Dialated Peoples, but not as much of fan of this solo effort. It for sure deserves a solid 3 stars from me. I think the hook is what missed the mark for me. It just didn't sound good to me, like he was straining to hit some notes that were un-attainable for him. The rap was on point, and the soul/stadium beat was good too.

Dilated! As Z said, one of those tracks you knew was going to be quality before you even pressed play. And I'm going to have to disagree with equinoxproductions, I liked the hook, thought it gave a soul/pain element that drove the track home.

This one is pretty good. I like Dilated peoples just like alot of people on the booth. But this is maybe just a above average song.
