For nearly any other singer on the planet a sentiment like “Girl I love you…but you could never be my number one” would be remarkably bold, but it’s an almost boring display of honesty from R. Kelly; after all, the man once invited the ladies to join him on his sex planet (which just so happened to be near Uranus). No, it’s musically - not lyrically - where Kells’ new single Be My #2 stands out. #2 marks a decidedly club/funk/techno departure for the usually r&b-centric crooner, a result no doubt of working with always eclectic producer Jack Splash, who here crafts a beat that bounces between classic funk and early morning Vegas club bounce. The hardest of hardcore Kelly fans may be put off by the Pied Piper’s new sound, but personally speaking, I’m enjoying the man’s work as much as ever: “that ass is incredible, but I can’t leave her [my number 1].” Only R. could get away with a line like that. For more “not your usual Kells” be sure to check out his last album Untitled, which dropped way back in December.

This song first appeared on the R&B / Pop Chart on April 19, 2010

wow interesting beat- funky, unusual, catchy! this is kells at his best in my opinion, smooth vocals over a nice beat and getting away with as many unforgivable lines as possible.

Like Nathan (see above) - as a longtime fan of Kelly's music - I found the production choice to be a very interesting.

With Kelly's vocal stylings there really isn't any type of track that cannot fit his skillset, but this Spash beat work is such a strong departure from the usually-more-bubbly production it becomes somewhat of a distraction.

With that said, after several listens today and over the past few months, I am fan of this song and its selection as a single. Now, will it be pushed?

I agree with Z. I'm not particularly impressed by this. I'm a huge advocate of Kelly's music but this just isn't doing it for me.

this is def one of the best songs on this album. it screams, SCREAMS, for an Estelle feature. love it, especially when he calls out haters at the end of the track.

This song gets 4 stars because oof the instrumentals. It is amazing to hear the horns mixed in with the techno/funk. R-Kelly's vocals are pretty good on the song but Jack Splash is really talented.

i really thought this would just be a very genaric instant for the radio type song, but with a beat like that it definalty not gettin much radio play. this is probably a filler song for his next album

i give it a 2 why? cause just like the title say its pretty much ok but aint going too get much spin on my mp3

I can't help but like my Kells more R&B ish, but as anyone who's seen the music videos knows, when Kelly performs this live the ladies lose their goddam minds.

Still, I have to rate it like I feel it. Average for Kells, at best.

I actually dig this one(except for that hook). This isn't what i expected, but i'm feeling the verses and the production. If he had taken this song a lil more serious and fixed that wack hook, Kells would have a hit. Instead, this is just an average, yet refreshingly different showing from Kelly.

The production & Kellz are massively different on this. The production sounds like a decent club track while Kellz (in places) sounds like he's singing over some smooth R&B type production (which he obviously isnt). The two elements of this song are good on there own, though they dont make for a good track.

Meh this is just average....Kellys album wasnt very strong at all....It will be interesting to see if Kelly can bounce back from this musical slump he seems to be in! He definitly has the talent to pull off a successful comeback

I could listen to this if it was part of an album that had the whole funky techno vibe but as a single it gets pretty average. R Kelly is one of best or maybe he was...

Based on the vibe and comparisons to other songs that may be in this category I have to give it a 5. I think people move away from the harmony, melody, arrangements, so and so in the music. This is a fun track to listen to and dance to. The lyrics may seem outrageous but he's just being blunt about it while most other folks would have a #2 but keep their moves close. Get em Kells.

Just listen to the ad libs and the way he runs on the beat. "the way you give it to me I've got to have it, have it, hav hav have it have it(repeat 2x) ..." "though she's my beauty queen girl you're my habit, habit, hab hab habit habit (repeat 2x)."

Z poses a great question. Will Jive push it like they should? Imagine being in the club and hearing this song come on. You and your lady or vice versa will be stepping your behinds off. "Dance! like you just don't care." And the last line of the song is a perfect way to address all the haters

I didnt want to like this I really didnt. Once the funk started coming out my speakers I couldnt help but smile. Its different, its not really Kells, but you can be sure its fun and entertaining.

Isn't that really all you can ask of an artist?

For some reason it sounds like a mix between a 70's song and an Akon track. The beat sounds disco old school...but R.Kelly somehow makes this track a decent one.

Another one of great composition by Jack Splash. His take is decidedly disco, funky and upbeat without ever actually being uptempo — it’s subtly done and the song is the better for it. Result is one of the better tracks from R.Kelly's most recent album, which after that #fail of a music video in "Echo", was titled "Untitled" for a reason - so that we can entirely forget about it and act like it never happened.

Tiger Woods anthem? Maybe last year at least.

Definitely some psychedelic production and R. Kelly does a decent job with it too. Although I feel as if it takes away from his vocals a bit. But the song is just hilarious, "Your my number 2, but you'll never be my number 1." I mean it is an R. Kelly song so its not that odd but just to say it sounds great. I don't think I could play this song to many times though, its just too much for me to take serious after a while.

I am to say the least not a fan of R-Kelley. I really do not like the over simplistic lyrics of this song. After listening to this song the very annoying lyrics of "Number One" were stuck in my head.

Nice... I have an affinity for grown folks music anyway. Yes, it doesn't sound like a classic R. Kelly, but artists do grow and experiment, for better or worse. This is for the better.
