Provoke - Friends With Benefits
Artist: Provoke
Producer: Reemabeets
Album: Critically Acclaimed
Label: World Vindicate (Unsigned)
Since this is the Queens emcee’s first Booth feature, readers may be wondering, “Who the F*ck Is Provoke?” Well, Friends With Benefits provides at least a partial answer: he’s an ambitious up-and-comer with an impressive flow, a sense of humor, and a very quirky taste in beats. Reemabeats’ production, based around a repeated sample of the “Final Jeopardy” theme (which was originally composed by show creator Merv Griffin as a lullaby for his son, if you were wondering) is the type of instrumental that might become annoying in the hands of a lesser rapper, but when paired with Provoke’s mile-a-minute rhymes it sounds just right. Call me crazy, but this emcee’s ability to elevate what could easily be a run-of-the-mill sex rap with unpredictable, hyperkinetic delivery is a little Luda-esque. In addition to appearing on the Tapemasters Inc.-presented Who the F*ck Is Provoke mixtape, Friends With Benefits is slated for inclusion on the rapper’s debut studio album, Critically Acclaimed, which has yet to receive a release date.

Haha that Jeopardy sample with the lyrics "I ain't sweatin that @*#$!!" really made me laugh. This is a creative concept I'll admit, but its just a little too over my head. That jeopardy is just too recognizable.

To quote the great Richard: "Reemabeats’ production, based around a repeated sample of the “Final Jeopardy” theme, is the type of instrumental that might become annoying in the hands of a lesser rapper."
This couldn't be more true. The production gets MAD annoying after the first minute, but you forget about it because you're listening to what Provoke has to say. Nice Booth introduction. |

Honestly, i think this is what hip hop is lacking, there needs to be more of this and less auto-tune, this artist provoke def has a future in rap, lets see what he does ..

Dude's flow is nice! I like it durin the verses, it def kept my attention. I really dont like the hook and I dont think it fit the production very well.
Speakin of the beat, it didn't annoy me too much. I'm liking these quirky, original beat I've been hearin on the booth lately (particularly those from Charles Hamilton) The thing about this production, though is that it wasn't mixed enough. They mixed the original a little throughout the song, but I think it could have been done better to make it less annoying. Overall, though, this is solid. |
