Those who have closely followed Plies’ career know that his primary character trait is his “realness.” As a matter of fact, the four-letter word has appeared in the titles of the Fort Myers native’s first two albums (The Real Testament and Definition of Real) and its superlative, Da Realist, set to be released on December 16. Another trend associated with Plies is the release of street singles and accompanying videos (see Runnin’ My Momma Crazy, Who Hotter Than Me). Such is the case with Heard of Me, which will certainly prompt a debate with the line “to be the best rapper, you gotta tell lies.” So, which would you rather have: creative wordplay and strong lyrical ability, or honest lyrics and street credibility? For Plies, the answer’s simple: to keep it real, no matter what.

I've never been a fan of Plies. His character is lame to me. I don't care if he's really real or not. We'll never know. To me, a "real" cat wouldn't have to continue to tell us to overcompensate. Maybe he's not offered a magazine cover or certain media press is because he is not worthy of that. What's real? T.I. That's real. Kanye West. That's real. Lupe Fiasco. That's real. Real doesn't mean being gutter or gangsta. It means being true to yourself, NO MATTER WHAT. This track has some awesome production and truthfully, Plies is not bad on this. This is probably his best song he's dropped. I can really respect him as a person until he really proves he's REAL and not just as gimmick, but from a perspective of just rating his song, this is definitely worth 3 stars, if not 4.

Plies annoys me more and more, but I gotta admit his music is catchy and fits into 2 categories: street and radio. If you haven't checked out those underground youtube videos, they are pretty funny and will give you a laugh. This one here is ok, the production is just average as well as the delivery and composition of the track. I still can't decide if Plies is "real" or not because he claims his street cred but puts out constant radio singles for 14 year old girls. This one gets an average 2 rating from me, not his best.

Real: existing or occurring as fact; actual rather than imaginary, ideal, or fictitious... Nope, sorry Str8OutaDalla, it says nothing here about forgetting the hood or changing due to the industry. So I gotta agree with michaelhannah. In addition, Kanye doesn't change with the industry, that's why he's creating 808's and Heartbreak; to be creative and do what he wants to do, not what the fans (and his label) want him to do. T.I. I admit has changed significantly but it's not because of the industry, its because he's bettered himself; something Plies can't seem to do. The whole point of making this music and making money was originally to get yourself out of the hood, so the hell would Plies want to keep it with him? If he wanted to do that he should've stayed underground. Not to mention, with tracks featuring Ne-Yo, The-Dream, T-Pain, Jamie Foxx, Akon, etc. He's obviously going for mainstream appeal; making Plies, even by ur definition, fake. I personally think he's a garbage rapper whose only getting some spotlight due to connections with DJ Khaled and the We The Best movement. Name me one good Plies metaphor, punchline, or anything. I've never heard one. As with the rest of his tracks, this song has a great beat. Too bad it wasn't sold to someone who could actually do something with it. :-\

Naw fam....no one has forgot about the hood. But no one really owes them anything either. T.I. for example....you know why the man got the gun charges? Cuz he's become who he is and the people in his hood that he's supposes to be "real" to don't care who he is, they just know he eating, and they wanna eat too. I don't respect that. Why go out of your way to "stay true" for people who don't respect you. I mean, it would be the same cat sticking him up for his chain and asking for an autograph at the same time. Real is staying true to yourself and not lying. If staying true to yourself is being a gangsta cuz that's what you were taught, then that's true...just as well as being a scholar or a activist or an eclectic person is real to someone who was destined and taught to be that. People confuse the term "real" with "hood" or "gangsta". In my experience, most people tooting their own horns about how "gangsta" in the term of "real" they are usually aren't really "real" to begin with.

PS. I am not a fan of DJ Khaled and I wouldn't call "We The Best" a movement but there are some sick rappers who associate with it: Lil Wayne, Jeezy, Ludacris now, Akon, T-Pain, even Nas and Game. Plies connections with Khaled get him spotlight amongst hip-hop's elite; a place he'd never be on his own.

Just to help with the definition of real (pun intended), I’ll quote Chris Rock:
“Niggas like to keep it real… real DUMB!” lol @ DJ J “Nope, sorry Str8OutaDalla, it says nothing here about forgetting the hood or changing due to the industry.” |

Can't wait for the new album. You know me, I have always liked Plies, and I think that this song is a great addition to the two he has released already. 2/3 isn't bad. I'm looking forward to DA REALIST...

I actually kinda dig this one from a production standpoint. Real is just that, real. If you are not honest about who you are and how you feel then your realness is challenged by people. The fact that plies has somehow sparked this conversation makes this worth the listen.

dang he's becoming more and more lyrical. I thought he don't have any skills, i was wrong. For me The Real Testament was 2/5, definition of Real was 3/5, but i think and hope da realist will be 4/5. and no plies you are lyrical.

The song is average at best and as for the "real" arguement, I agree with being true to yourself and to others. A perfect example for me is you got dudes from the suburbs that would rock the backstreet boyz and @*#$! when they are in their homes but when they get in front of other people they wont admit they feel bsb..I would consider a kid from the burbz real if he came up my street bangin their songs cause he doesnt care what anyone thinks and is real to himself. It aint my thing but I dont hate on what others like either.

I didnt like Plies to begin with. But after ridin around wit my brother and all he would listen to after the Real Testament was Plies. He began to grow on me. Simple as this, if u listen to Plies u began to understand what u r goin to get from him, which is, a catchy beat and/or hook, and below avg lyrics and most importantly a song that u r able to feel or at least connect with. He is definitely not in the Top 10 best rappers alive, off the top of my head he aint in the top 25. And as far as him not being real because he talk proper english, WTF, the man jus said that he dropped outta college, so he had to have some type of schooling. If u niggas think that by him goin to school makes him less real, then yall got it @*#$! up. How u go hate on a nigga that try and better himself? But as far as this song goes, its aight, his flow is gettin smoother with each album..

yo Micheal Hannah you better know Plies before you say hes not real...Plies was arrested in 2006 at a club for firing a gun in the club with his brother...he got the charge down to a "Possession of a Hand Gun Charge" and i also heard that Plies entourage (Certified Goons) opened fire on the crowd because his show was cut short 15 minutes for lil boosie...that i have no idea if its true. I also wouldnt say Kanyes real or lupee, their real to themselves sure but Plies and T.I. real is bein real gangstas thats what Plies is talkin bout....anyways another good song by plies lookin forward to his album

i gota disagree with all o'yall..my baby daddy grew up a couple of houses next to plies..u cant judge sumbody until u know what really goes down in they area code..plies is a goon and got mad hataz cuz he made it before a lot of fort myers rappers like frank linim (mad props to u 2!!) he bout wut he be talkin about 0 and he CAN talk all dat @*#$! cuz he made it in 1 year..a lot of the lyrics in his songs got stories behind em like "got em hatin" which is da story behind his beef with frank l.
i @*#$! with plies!!! he got mad lyrical skills specially in his mixtapes and if his words dont make sense to ya then u ain been threw da street life yet..all plies is classic cuz he original and ain nobody else got his style |
