With all the hype surrounding Swagger Like Us (partially due to the many MCs who have freestyled over the Kanye West-produced beat), it was only a matter of time before some enterprising producer swiped a sample from the record. So, whose rhymes would be used on this new anthem? Why of course those of Jay “Checkin’ My Fresh” Z. Helmed by production/rap duo Play-N-Skillz (who recently stepped into the Booth for an exclusive interview), Checkin’ My Fresh finds the Texas brothers sampling Jay-Z’s verse on their hook, and adding their own unique swagger to the mix on their respective verses. Though fans are usually quick to judge successful producers who venture out from behind their crafty boards, would-be haters should withhold judgment till their sophomore album, Out Tha Box, is released early next year.

Unfortunately before hearing this song, i KNEW that the "featuring Jay-Z" was too good to be true and i KNEW it was a sample from his other song. The result is a semi-annoying hook.
Regardless, this song is still pure fire! They have recently been known for their production, which holds 100% true on this record, and they can rap too. Overall, great party record, sounds like somethin I'm lookin forward to hearing in the clubs! |

How predictable was this....lol. We were thinking the same thing cb! LOL. The production could have been WAY more epic with a way harder, sharper drum kit. That cheap kit is wack. They can rap a little bit. I'll throw it in rotation, but I agree it could have been executed better.

even though im tired of hearing whatever comes from "swagger like us", i cant hate play n skillz for being creative on this. their production and delivery has always been one of my favorites... plus they hold it down for my latinos.

"Checkin’ My Fresh" was my favorite line in SLU. It works.
These guys have a GREAT stage performance, full of swagger in fact haha. Don't sleep on Play N' Skillz in 2009.

I, too, was fooled when I read "Play-N-Skillz featuring Jay-Z" on the title. I can't knock the beat and their effort on this club-filled candidate, but I can't really accept this song as a full rotation without hearing a real verse from the Roc-A-Fella himself. Because the song clocks in at less than three minutes, I can give 'em some leeway. Recommendation: if they can have an actual verse by Jay-Z, and not just a sample, I'll be happy.

I don't like Jay-Z, he trash, so that means that this song sucks. Sorry, plus the only thing he says is Chekin' My Fresh, checkin checkin... which is annoying.. I can't belive why anybody would like this =P but yeah anyways GARBAGE!
