The word “hustle” might just be the most overused word in hip-hop, but there’s really no better term to describe Pill’s ascension. Just a few months after the then-relatively-unknown ATL rapper made his DJBooth debut with Music, Pill is now a household name (in hip-hop households anyway) who’s signed to Asylum. Hustle partially explains his success, but the man’s music also can’t be denied, especially when it sounds like Thoughts. Featuring some absolutely crushing production by Tecknowledgy, Thoughts is Pill at his most lyrically intense; in the intro he promises to put his soul into the mic, and he delivers. I could do without the extended monologue in the middle of the track (don’t say it, rhyme it), but it’s a small complaint given the song’s undeniable energy. Thoughts is the first leak off Pill’s upcoming 1140: The Overdose Mixtape, which follows his Prescription and Refill mixtapes (get it?). Is there a Rehab mixtape on the way? You’ll have to keep it locked to DJBooth to find out.

When we first featured Pill's music I was not sure he was major label, mainstream material. I don't usually judge an artist off one song, but "Music" just didn't grab me (I gave it a 3, but that sample got me!).
Since then Pill has done nothing but impress me and "Thoughts" only helps his cause with the Booth brass. Plain and simple: his music makes me feel like he gives a sh*t (which is more than I can say about plenty of artists today). |

I think hip-hop heads are still on the fence with Pill. He sometimes sounds dope, sometimes formulaic. Personally this is the most respect I've ever had for Pill on a track - he came with it. Add if a stellar beat and I couldn't help but feel Thoughts.

Most heads are on the fence about every artist from the south, especially a conscious one. I'm not really feeling this beat, but pill spits some real dope lines. "i try to visualize a better life, but it gets clouded by the smoke from these metal pipes" is just one of many. 3.5 stars

This song is weak. Nothing original in the production, lyrics or subject matter. If I wasnted to hear this I'd dig in the archives and listen to some old Wu...actually that would be better obviously.

This is substance right here, I like the aggressive flow. I think Pill has a bright future.

The first half of the song is really the strongest part of the track. After the two verses and a hook he goes into a monlogue and goes into the third verse. Its this interruption which took me off this great vibe he had me in. Also he got considerably lyrically weaker on the third verse which also through me off.

Pill is at his best when he's spitting about that real shit. That's what makes him a nice addition to this rap game. He went in on that second verse though. This is realness.
