If you were alive and had ears (and weren’t a cornstalk) in 1997, I’m betting you could still hum the tune of Sex and Candy, the one hit scored by rock group Marcy Playground. I’m not gonna lie, I loved that song – but if you didn’t, you’ll be pleased to hear that this Sex and Candy, the first Booth feature from up-and-coming emcee Phreshy, has nothing but a title and lyrical theme in common with that joint. This orally-fixated single sees the Atlantic Records newcomer hooking up with Next Selection singer Krys Ivory over the sizzling keyboards and handclaps of producer Tommy Hittz. While freaky food metaphors aren’t the newest lyrical strategy in the book, the collaborators tackle the concept with panache – and I’ve got to hand it to the guy for exposing the inherent hilarity in the word “Nutrageous.” Seriously, how did I ever look at one of those without cracking up? Anyway, those who like what they’re hearing should keep it locked for release details on SMC x SC, a collaborative mixtape with previously-featured duo Surf Club and Kidd Domination.

When we were first introduced to Phreshy as rapper AYO, I had my doubts about his ability to make a name for himself. Long after the name change I still have my reservations about a long career ahead, but for this moment I will give him kudos on a supremely catchy record.
Props to producer Tommy Hittz, whose work I have never heard of before, for crafting a killer beat. I have a feeling your table is ready, sir.

Phreshy surprised me with this joint. Just by looking at the name alone, I wasn't expecting much. The production from Tommy Hittz is an instant like for me and combined with the catchiness of the hook from Krys Ivory this is a very solid track for me. Phreshy's verses had their moments, but the hook and production elevated this up to another level.

yeah z, i was just about to correct richard about how this isn't phreshy's "first" feature but just his first feature under this new alias. this song is alright, the strongest point of this is obviously the hook. the beat is also very good . i thought phreshy ended each verse pre maturely and also ended them too vulgarly for the hook the succeeds it. 2.5 stars

I was actually kind of hoping it'd be a sample of that Marcy Playground track honestly. That was the joint back in the day. Catchy beat, the hook's allright, Phreshy's flow is decent. Not really my thing, but I can't knock it too hard. It's ok.

seeing this title anyone's first reaction would be to skip it but after i gave it a listen i cant get the whole melody out of my head.
Phreshy's verses on this song are very clever and on point with the theme of the song, the hook is definitely dope from Krys Ivory. this is the first time ive heard production from Tommy Hittz but this is something to make me check his production out again without hesitation. i need to hear this on the radio soon someone has to make that happen! |
