When Duck Down Records announced Pete Rock and Smif-n-Wessun were releasing an album called Monumental together, there was wide-spread enthusiasm for the project. Now that the album is out, the trio wanted to let the world know that they are stand up guys on single (I’m A) Stand Up G featuring Black Rob. Pete Rock, one of the fathers of the sound of 90’s hip-hop, brings forth another fantastic beat that is perfect for Smif-n-Wessun’s “real talk” approach. With a slide bassline and the appropriate tone of horns pulsing at just the right time, this beat is grit and grime to the fullest. Smif-n-Wessun, leaving behind the gun talk they’re known for – for the most part – deliver a message that seems like a retort to claims that might’ve been made against them recently. Former Bad Boy turned Duck Down emcee Black Rob also joins the duo, delivering a verse that perfectly compliments Tek and Steele. “Acting like it’s all love like a game of tennis” adds Rob, driving the point of the song home even further.
