Paul Couture - Flu Flow
Producer: Paul Couture
Album: Bossmode Presents: Vol. 1 The Mixtape
Label: PhaseOne Comm/Sony RED/Bossmode Ent.
More often than not, it takes an artist a few tries to perfect their craft (unless you’re Odd Future, then apparently you can go straight to the top almost immediately). While we’re not the end-all be-all of music, dual threat Paul Couture has had a mixed review of his songs so far on the site. Don’t fret yet, Mr. Self Made Millionaire fans, as today we feature his new street single Flu Flow, and it’s arguably the best – excuse me, sickest - joints he’s thrown down yet. The Texan native surprises right off the bat with self-made production that is equal parts percussion, brass and hypnotic bounce. The enlistment of fellow Austinians Tee Double, ChoSe and KJ Hines helps to turn this into a Texas-sized anthem full of solid flows and greatly timed bars: “...and I’m doing that new money dance that the hater’s can’t stand, and the ladies like ‘Peezy give me one more chance’.” If you can get sick with this, be sure to keep Couture’s latest project, Bossmode Presents: Vol. 1 The Mixtape, on your radar come May 22.

"Flu Flow" is sick. Get it? Sick. Yeah, so, anyways, corny jokes aside, this isn't what I was expecting from Paul (which seems to be the consensus - read Sig's review above). All the emcees were average-to-above-average on the mic, but the production was outstanding. Austin, your city clearly doesn't have limits.

I could listen to this beat for hours, something about it just pops. As Z, said, each emcee didn't really impress. I thought the verses and the hook really took away from the power of the beat. Had this been given to the right emcees, this could have been something special.

That beat is just plain annoying, self made millionaire was a huge hit in my high school years, this is good, if it was accapella....

I like the production, but I can see how that repetitive horn section might get annoying @Aussie_Accents. Verses are okay. I wish that synth at the end would have come in earlier. I liked that part better over the hook.

I expected a LOT more from something that was supposed to be "sick". These verses were lame, especially the first. Nothing was good on this to me... 1.5
