I’m going to assume this isn’t your first time on DJBooth and skip over the Novel introductions. (If it is, welcome. You’ve got about seven million dope Novel tracks to catch up on; get busy). Instead, I’ll just cut right to the chase and say that the singer/producer/songwriter/freestyle alum has once again redefined the meaning of musical versatility on his new track State of Loneliness. Having already delivered a cello-infused baby maker (Take Over) and narcotic-driven rider (Caffeine & Cigarettes), on State of Loneliness Novel draws his inspiration from a mixture of classic soul and gospel, producing a track that slowly smokes up a smoldering piano and guitar riff. Even more impressively, State of Loneliness is one of his best vocal performances yet, and that’s saying something given his mile-long resume. Frankly, it’s only a matter of time before the man cures cancer. State of Loneliness is the first offering from his upcoming mixtape Legato Blues Summer, obviously set to heat up your speakers this summer, and as that wasn’t enough, he’s also got a new album Caligraphy in the works, due out “soon.”

What I love about Novel as an artist is that he can make a song like "State of Loneliness." It takes a confident (and obviously talented) human being to share their thoughts with others, let alone write them and perform them in a song for the world to hear. If you believe in the next generation of musical talent then you believe in Novel.

Not really my type of song, a tad too slow. Production was relaxing and Novel had smooth vocals. How is this talented dude unsigned?

I don't understand why Novel is still unsigned...
Maybe he's taking the Drake approach and waiting for the best deal before he jumps on with a particular label, but then again, maybe he doesn't even need to be signed. *Almost* classic. |

Always been a huge fan of Novel - he's prolific and so versatile which is something I appreciate about other artists - and this one is a nice slow burn.
Usually I leave these types of records to the homie D'Angelo, but between getting busted for drug possession and getting nabbed for soliciting bj's, I've been spending a lot more time playing Novel's music on the ipod, and this is the reason why... Almost classic. |

Novel is one of the most underrated rnb singers. redoin sky might fall and mad world proved how you can make an already amazin song even better. novel's vocals is defintely an inspiration. the man is on point wit everythin he does

Novel is the truth when it comes to blending smooth vocals, song-writing, and production. I haven't heard anything from him that I didn't like. This track doesn't fit as a "classic," but I'm hard-pressed to call it a "banger." Somewhere in the middle of those is the category is..."incredible?" Hah, not quite the term I was looking for, help me out Booth.

Goddamn. I'm always afraid of the Boy Who Cried Wolf syndrome, like I spend so much time telling people how great the new Novel track is that they'll stop believing me, but what else can I do? This track, like nearly every track he drops, is incredible. Just incredible. I never knew he could get into that Anthony Hamilton groove - once again the man impresses.

This is only the 3rd or 4th song I've heard from this guy, and every time I hear a new track I like this dude more and more. He sounds a lot like Anthony Hamilton which is a good thing because Hamilton is one of my favorite R&B artists.

@Yung Gunna - This song might be slow, but there is nothing "old" about it. The tempo of a song does not dictate its newness level.

I like the simple production on the track and Novel's liquid voice. Definitely Al Green, Anthony Hamilton, or D'Angelo-esque. @JKL11293, He used to have a deal through Capitol I think, a couple years back. Not sure what happened to it though. I guess alot has happened since he could "eat a peach for an hour"
