Industry politics may have left Novel feeling like he’s stuck in Suspended Animation, but his recent output has shown no sign of creative stagnation—if Put It On, the second leak off his forthcoming mixtape, is any indication, he’s as determined as ever to continue pushing things forward, living up to his stage name with tunes that are atypical, avant-garde, offbeat, fresh, funky, and now (shouts to thesaurus.com!). Lyrically, Novel’s latest feature is a fairly conventional R&B love ballad, but, as far as sound is concerned, it’s a bit of a departure. Here, he goes all-out with the synths, crafting a chilly, hypnotically downtempo instrumental that sounds almost as if it could slow to a dead stop at any moment. It’s undeniably catchy, but it leaves the emotional heavy lifting to the artist’s vocals—unsurprisingly, Novel rises to the occasion with soulful verses and a hook that reaches for listeners’ heartstrings through an intricate web of studio-assisted harmonies and robotic vocal filters. This is not your typical mixtape throwaway record. "Put It On" is Novel reminding the world - I am here and I am not going anywhere.

This dude could seriously be a legend one day. He can sing! I don't think I've given a single one of his songs below a 4. I'm gonna give this a 5 though. The whole song just flowed so well together and like Legitimate Hip Hop Inc. I just can't get over this dude's vocals. Wow.

Funny thing about this record is its jus a electronic sample that jus been slowed down ALOT ... and just added on a few more original keyboard sounds...JULY 4th. LETS GO!!!

This song started out well but then it became kinda boring to my ears. I like his vocals and I liked his other songs, but this one just didn't catch me. It is solid but I don't like the beat

Novel—like the rest of the freshman class—are redefining the mixtape. The album-quality cuts coming off of their tapes this year (Drake, Cudi, Wale, Novel) is unbelievable.
Vocals, production, this man can do no wrong. |

Novel is just as soulful and melodic as usual. I love his vibe, but I liked it a little less over this production. It is still definitely worth rotation, though, just not my favorite from Novel.
