Novel - Nightcall (To My Ex)
Artist: Novel
Producer: Kavinsky
Album: Red Wine & Ambien
Label: Unsigned
I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I find it oddly reassuring that even someone as smooth, confident and emotionally mature as Novel can be just as much of a basket case as the rest of us when it comes to obsessing over exes. On the other hand, if he’s having trouble keeping it together, what hope is there for the rest of us? However you slice it, new mixtape single/video Nightcall finds the Booth-acclaimed singer/songwriter/rapper-producer in a position that most of us have occupied at one time or another. Flowing over a downbeat, synth-driven instrumental borrowed from French electro-house producer Kavinjsky‘s Nightcall, Novel gathers his thoughts regarding a woman who recently walked out of his life. Though he admits, “I’d probably make a better living if I focused on the game,” he can’t seem to stop mentally rehashing the fights, the lies, and the late-night text battles that led up to their split. Moody yet cathartic, this cut is just one of many fresh, creative jams to be found on the artist’s Red Wine & Ambien tape. Keep it locked for the latest on the project, which has yet to receive a solid drop date.

Novel could take any source material, strip it down, flip it around, remix it, whatever... and make it all his own and OWN it. Which is what he does here. The dark tone of the visual, along with the theme of his new project, really makes this an intriguing listen.

I was a fan of this song, and the video just makes it that much better.

This beat reminds me of Scarface Movie. I like Novel's flow over the beat. The chorus is pretty chill too.

I remember hearing this beat from Lupe's "American Terrorist III"...

I am a HUGE fan of the original Nightcall, and it has been my earworm for a while, so I simply can't hate when classy singer like Novel is on it. I'm just disappointed that he removed the chorus from the original, as it was the best part of it.

Liked the song but that autotune or whatever it was in the middle was terrible.

i love the original track, but in response to another poster wishing he would have kept the original chorus, at least he kept the spirit of the original chorus, cool track
