Novel - Hotels & Heartbreak
Artist: Novel
Producer: Justin Kahler
Album: Under Water, Overwhelmed EP
Label: Unsigned
Never one to shy away from the darker corners of human experience, Novel has dug even deeper than usual in the lead-up to his next project release. Having lamented the tendency of true love to go sour on I Know Now and used narcotics to dull the ache of romantic anguish on Self Medicating, the ATL Renaissance artist continues his exploration of love’s destructive side with the world premiere of Hotels & Heartbreak. Here, Novel puts on his “rapper” hat to tell the story of a woman whose past traumas, combined with her lack of life choices, drive her to consider selling her body. Joining the headliner over Justin Kahler‘s piano-led boardwork, guest spitter Amir Taron picks up the narrative thread on the closing verse. For this poignant jam and much more, check out the Under Water, Over Whelmed EP when it released later this week via iTunes (and available at DJBooth for stream).

I love when new Novel records pop up in my inbox. His music is an exercise in true cathartic release. His vocals always bleed vulnerability, something that is so rare these days.

Excited for the full EP release. This is one of my favorite tracks on the project, and I'm not just saying that because I was involved in it! Novel & Amir are truly talented people. Keep it comin!

Vocals from Novel were good, but I wasn't really digging Amir Taron. Still a solid effort from the two though.

Cool work by Novel and Amir Taron on this one. Reminds me of a track Lupe would do... Great vocals by Novel and tight verse by Amir. The beat by Justin Kahler goes together just right. 3.5 out of 5

Damn, how long has it been since I heard a Novel track like this. The man has a real talent for really making some quality music. Novel raps and sings just as good as anyone in the game. This was just an all around great track. Amir did his thing and was a good feature. Production is gonna resonate in my head all day.
