Nina Sky - You Ain't Got It (Funk That)
Artist: Nina Sky
Producer: DJ Yonny
Album: The Other Side EP
Label: Polo Grounds/J Records
Question: why is it that every time I sit down to listen to a fresh set of Booth features, I hear a new joint inspired by a classic from the ‘80s or ‘90s? Funk Dat! OK, just kidding, I happen to enjoy that trend quite a bit – especially when the results are as catchy and creative as You Ain’t Got It, the latest EP single from Puerto Rican-bred identical-twins Nina Sky. Here, the head-nodding, breakbeat-driven instrumental from rapper/producer Sagat’s ‘94 club hit Funk Dat, gets a synth-fortified reworking from DJ Yonny; over this pulse-pounding backdrop, Nicole and Natalie Albino soulfully exercise their feminine wiles, challenging a lucky fella to “show [them] what heaven feels like.” This single’s overall vibe is considerably edgier than that of their last feature, the Booth-acclaimed Beautiful People but, as far as I’m concerned, no less appealing. Those who agree with my assessment can find plenty more where this came from on the sisters’ The Other Side EP, set to drop sometime in late summer.

Extremely catchy. It tight-ropes the line between pop and techno perfectly.

Wow, talk about changing their look. That's a real 80s vibe in the picture.
Anyway, definitely the kind of track I could see them spinning at a weekend afternoon party like L.A.'s The Do-Over, but I don't think this has the mainstream appeal to really put Nina Sky back on the map...and I'm not sure how badly they want to be on the mainstream map. |

Not sure if this will hit in the club, but its a great track. Its about time someone remixed the Funk That cut. Nina Sky do a great job of it.

Good, but not good enough. The Nina Sky I know were the sisters who transformed "Move Ya Body" from a "club hit" to "club lust" (I'm serious - the lyrics in the second verse had sexual innuendo written all over it, despite the song's original intentions). Noreaga selected them as the hook girls for "Oye Mi Canto" and "Mas Maiz" after the song took over. The hooks they delivered on each of these songs were perfect - they fit with the song's energy and topic, at the same time, keeping the chicks in check.
I can't say the same for "You Ain't Got It." A nostalgic head-nodding sample combined with original lyrics - excellent. What's missing and lacking, and what they need to work on, is the chorus. Every song by Nina Sky has either a hook, a bridge, or a refrain - no chorus. If I were to submit these lyrics to any lyrics website, I could easily label which of these parts are the verses, the hooks, bridges, the chorus and refrains. "You ain't got it / You ain't good enough" sounds like a hook because the words are repeated over and over. "You can try again / Get denied again" is another hook. None of these hooks have substance or meaning. A chorus is a repeated verse within a song that uses the meaning of the song as the main attraction. A hook is a repeated verse, usually followed by a chorus, where repetition in the words is king. See the difference? This is what Nina Sky needs to work on in order for this song to catapult themselves back into the green light. As a music fan, I like this song. As a critic, the song feels lifeless, no substance. I'd suggest a remix. |

Im a fan of the original...lol! I have loved Nina Sky for the simple fact that they have really good ears for catchy dance music that makes people "feel safe" to party and dance...and they are hot!
