Nikki Lynette - Pick a Side
Artist: Nikki Lynette
Featuring: Dwele
Producer: Matt Hennessey & Nikki Lynette
Album: Roses N' Guns 2: The BADDER ASSED Mixtape That Rocks
Label: Unsigned
Other than setting fire to our SXSW stage (figuratively speaking, although some fire breathing would have been cool) last month, it’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Chicago’s rising queen of rock/soul/rap/punk/polka/etc, Nikki Lynette. But never fear fans, since she last Gave ‘Em Hell Nikki’s been hard at work on a new project, the first fruits of which you’re now biting into with the world premiere of new single Pick a Side. In not-so-typical Lynette fashion, Pick a Side finds the headliner and frequent collaborator Matt Hennessey joining forced behind the boards to create a guitar infused anthem to the broken hearted. Vocally Nikki switches with ease between a strongly sung hook and conversationally rapped lyrics, while guest feature and usual crooner Dwele stretches the boundaries of his vocal cords as well by delivering some slowly flowed bars. With eclecticism like this there’s no telling what Ms. Lynette’s upcoming, DJBooth and Digiwaxx sponsored, impressively titled Roses N’ Guns 2: The BADDER ASSED Mixtape That Rocks will sound like – we’ll just have to wait until May 18 to find out.

I like the more refined production on this but would like to hear Nikki step outside her comfort zone a bit more - still feelin it though!

Nikki's versatility is her greatest asset. She can sing, she can spit, and she merges the two skills together in a highly believable (and enjoyable) manner. Bright future.

Don't know if I like this too much, it's ok I guess, but a lil too "singy" for me... 2.5

I dont know why but I slipped into a salt n pepper/other female rapper daze because of the weird singy/flow kind of twing she has. Sorry but the due on the track is a little bit more solid than she is. Her lyrics are poetic and she has potential but I need her to work more on not layin on top of the beat but intertwining like that sexy guitar.

The comment from this ToniBizz chick is WAY off. Nikki Lynette is BY FAR the most versatile unsigned female artist in the game. I was surprised to hear her rap in this backpacker type of flow. I always think its funny when people critique what an artist "needs" to do when they obviously are judging off of 1 song. Go listen to Best In the World or Darling Nikki & THEN tell me you're in a position to critique her rhymes. AND Dwele rapping = Something I NEED to hear more often

I really like Nikki. Her off beat, unique sound really makes her likeable. Her lyrics are clever, but her flow is what really impressed me. Dwele is a solid feature, but this song is all about Nikki.

I must be late but when did Dwele start rapping? Hmm interesting. This track was cool and once again great to hear from a female rapping about something besides what most expect.

Yo, that beat is hypnotizing. I immediately started bouncing my head to it. I never payed any attention to nikki Lynette until now and I think I picked the right song to give her a chance. Also, I didn't know Dwele started rapping, either and I was moderately impressed by his skills. This song bangs from everywhere.
