Nicki Minaj - Massive Attack
Artist: Nicki Minaj
Featuring: Sean Garrett
Producer: Sean Garrett and Alex Da Kid
Album: Untitled Debut
Label: YM/CM/Universal Motown
Other than Drake’s Thank Me Later, no other album in 2010 will be as highly (and insanely) anticipated as Nicki Minaj’s debut effort. So it’s no wonder that the internet has been all atwitter (pun intended) after the world’s most mentally unstable Barbie finally dropped the official version of the album’s lead single, Massive Attack, today. What are people talking about? Well, they’re certainly talking about the production and hook work of Sean Garrett, who here crafts an appropriately skittering, post-apocalyptic beat, but predictably most of the debate surrounds Nicki’s verses, which in typically schizophrenic Nicki style fluctuate wildly from smooth punchlines to intensely aggressive threats. In other words, it’s exactly what people love, or hate, or love to hate about Nicki’s rhyme style. So, does Massive Attack point in the direction of a hit - or a flop - for Nicki when she finally drops her untitled debut album this summer? I’ll leave it up to the Booth to decide. Have at it people.

Her album is gonna be crazy! She is running the rap game for all females right now! This track obviously has high energy! But the beat kind of makes me feel like I'm in the Jungle...not the club. Banger!

I'm a fan Nikki's original flow but I never really got into this track. It just didn't seem to mesh for me.

i dont like sean garretts voice, why he is called 'the pen' and he does as expected here- has some nice lines but doesnt impress vocally. nikki on the other hand had nice energy, matched the beat i reckon. still not convinced of nikki though...

damn nikki might becoming lest attractive to me...wtf is this and i don't not like sean garrett i think he should stay behind scenes because he is good behind the board im sure...i was actually trying to pull for her and i actually took my bias out of the equation but this is getting on my nerves and she sounds the same on every track always that high end scary voice at the end of every punchline...i miss trina...

The only song I have liked Nicki Minaj in was Lloyd's 'Take It Off' other than that I just can't get into her music. At all.

I can't stand her, but i was actually looking forward to this...but god was this awful...her rhymes are terrible...i didn't hear one good punchline and that is the only reason i would listen to her annoying voice...the hook was also annoying...i just don't see how people can stand hearing that voice everytime they get in their car
I will refuse to listen to another one of her songs |

Im not a fan of Nicki, I dont get the hype. This song is pretty wack if you ask me. Sean Garrett needs to stay behind the scenes, because I dont think he's that good of a singer

I hate to be a little bit of a divisive force here, but no doubt, this track lives up to the hype surrounding it. I don't know if Nicki can carry an entire album on her own, but it absolutely works here.
If you're not feeling it, listen to it more than once and give it bass. |

This is interesting...it took me a while to understand where the hell that beat was coming from! Its a little mixed up, maybe a bit too much, but Nikki made it hot! One thing is I just hate sean garrett...he cant sing he has a whiny voice and any song he's on he wrecks...Im sure it will be a grower...

Wow, I hated this upon first listen, now I find it crazily good! Same scenerio as "Break Up". Sean has some hot beats that come off as weird as first, but slowly burn into your mind.

Listening to this track made me realize something; while Nicki can be entertaining in small doses, I don't know if she's got enough to carry a whole track, or a whole album, on her own. Still, I can't deliver a final verdict until I hear more. As for Massive Attack...it's...ok. I'm felling generous, I'll upgrade to three stars.

I've always been a fan of Nicki but I don't know if this was the best pick for her 1st single. I feel like this may kill her buzz soon enough :-/

For some odd reason the first time I listen to a track with Sean Garrett's thumbprints all over it the end result is almost always immediate disappointment. However, a few more listens and I always change my mind. Case in point: Mario's smash hit "Break Up."
While I am not sure I'll ever truly enjoy - or appreciate - Nicki's on-the-mic skills (which are there), I have to give props to her. She is the only relevant/commercially viable female emcee in the game today (sorry, Trina). Does that mean this single will pop just because? No. But it can... |

I'm a pretty big critic of Minaj because the majority of her material that I have been introduced to are guest 16s that seem out of place. This isn't the Case here. This works well for me, but I'm still on the fence about if she can carry an album on her own. We'll See. It always takes a couple spins for me to pick up the vibe [See "Heard 'Em All" & "Break Up"] on Garrett's production. Take another listen if your not sold.

Is it just me or does Minaj's off-center flow seem like a natural fit for Garrett's often bizarre production? Think about it.

Unnecessarily overproduced, noisy and repetitive to the point of annoyance. And a full listen to chorus requires some serious effort. Throw in Nicki Minaj and each element is competing for dominance. The result is not pleasant on ears.
I pray that this song does NOT make any noise outside of blog fodder. Fcuk you Sean Garrett! |

I'm actually going to say the low point of this track is sean garrett. the beat is terrible. Nicki was consistent and the hook was nothing special. i don't want to hear this again... simply because of the production.

I completely agree with Nathan. Nicki is great on some guest verses, but I'm not sure how I feel about her releasing an album.. Production here was all over the place. I'm not sure I like Sean Garrett's style. Nicki was only OK. Not very impressed.

Not bad to say the least, it's a bit annoying so I'm glad it's short but Nicki is a little entertaining. I am however getting tired of those Young Money lines or flow style i.e "I'm swingin from the vein, mango" or whatever she said. That's beginning to get old guys.

I just realized something...Nicki's seemingly abandoned her Lil' Kim imitations from back in the day, and has shifted more towards a Missy Elliott-type eclectic sound (and that's a good thing, because I've always been a fan of Missy, and she was really the last femcee to consistently be on top of the game).
I think this is just like most other Sean Garrett tracks, and will have a Booth feedback rating similar to Mario's "Break Up"-lukewarm at first, but it grows on them, and ends up becoming a Best of the Booth nominee! |

First things first, Sean Garrett is an absolute mess on this track and hsi production tries to be too mad and also ends up being a mess... Nicki held it down as usual and ive still got faith in her.
