The Niceguys - Not at All
Artist: The Niceguys
Producer: Free (of The Niceguys)
Album: Green Room EP
Label: 265 LLC
They say that “nice guys finish last,” but who are “they,” anyways? A bunch of jerks? Nice guys talking about themselves in the third person? The world may never know. In any case, Easy Yves Saint, DJ Candlestick, Christolph and Free are four Niceguys who don’t need to worry about being on the wrong end of that aphorism; judging by their latest single and first DJBooth feature, Not at All, these Houston hopefuls are a good ways ahead of the pack. Here, Free’s soulfully-brassy, lushly-sampled instrumental groove sets the stage for some unapologetically braggadocious raps and soulful sung vocals from the Lone Star State crew. Emcee Yves shows himself to be no amateur on the mic, lacing the silky instrumental with a frantic, syncopated flurry of allusive punchlines and elaborate disses. So, Booth readers, are these guys as Nice (in the “talented” sense) as they clearly believe themselves to be? If this track’s made a fan out of you, you can hear more on their Green Room EP, dropped last December and available now online. Also, stay on the lookout for this cut’s official video accompaniment, coming soon!

The brass in the production is nice. Nice and mellow. To me, the hook was the best. The verses were alright.

I don't like being labeled a "nice guy" since I view it as a way to complement someone who doesn't seem to have anything else going for them (just my opinion, lets not start a comment thread war).
Clearly, these Niceguys don't mind, but with good reason (based on my theory) - they have plenty going for them (take a listen and tell me I'm wrong). Looking forward to what they have in store for the future. |

The production had so many elements to it. Maybe one too many for the type of flow over it. I would like to hear more of a smooth, SIMPLE beat, with that flow, as opposed to a quick flow with a slightly cluttered beat. Great job overall though, would love to hear whats next.

Damn, this one really hit me, I'm loving the big band feel on the hook and the production. I don't know if I can say the verses completely lived up to the beat, but the Nice Guys have impressed me, I may just go check out Green Room right now.

The production is smooth... But the verses just go too "against-the-grain"... (...atleast for my taste, anyway...) 2 - **'s

the MC or MCs, i dont know how many of em rap, but whoever it is is tearin the shit up. I guess on the surface many people wont get it off top, there are alot of double-triple entendre...metaphor type lines inside the verses, listen closer. I was feelin em. Beat is sick, hook is sick. This record is a very pleasant surprise from the underground....i'll have to look out for them. these dudes seem legitimate

Ah, love from my own backyard. The Niceguys are composed of two producers (Free & Christoph) one DJ (Candlestick) & one emcee (Easy Yves Saint). It's odd to see the same people you went to college with get shine in the same lanes of music you frequent.
Like previously mentioned, Free's horn selection and the chorus may seem like they overwhelm the listener more than Easy Yves Saint's verses but there's enough slick talk packed in between the drums and brass that should perk up the ears for those who feel Houston hip-hop is the same as it was back in 2005. |
