Earlier this month, we featured If I Ruled the World ‘09 a revamped version of Nas’ 1996 hit that marked the beginning of this year’s Smirnoff Signature Mix Series.  The newly-released second entry finds East Coast icons Greg Nice and Smooth B teaming up with a SoCal hipster-hop trio to craft an updated cut that’s as Nice & Smooth as a refreshing cocktail (complete with Smirnoff vodka, of course).  On Funky for You ‘09, the duo join forces with Like, Mibbs, and BeYoung of Pacific Divison to bring their 1990 classic into the modern day.  Since that throwback sound is one of today’s biggest trends, 9th Wonder doesn’t have to stray too far from the old-school—as the emcees lace their verses with references to their drinks of choice, the beatsmith delivers a chilled-out instrumental driven by orchestral samples, and Tyler Woods completes the mix with some soulful backing vocals. If you’re thirsty for more funky reimaginings of classic cuts, stay tuned for a Kardinal Offishall-featuring revamp of Buckshot‘s I Got Cha Opin.

Nice spin on the classic. It goes down real smooth (which Smirnoff should get a kick out of...)

Gets a 4 from me just on the production. Could listen to this over and over and just enjoy 9th Wonder's work. Not sure I like the verses as much as the original, but I can always get down with a smooth track like this.

For some odd reason I couldn't help but think about I dream of Gennie or how ever you spell it. The background music, or even Austin powers. I think it was the third verse that came off kind of cartoonish to me. Albeit, it had a good vibe to it, spring day, sunny 75 degrees, windows down with this track on would put me in a good ass mood.

Never heard the original. This one isn't bad but I wouldn't listen to it again. The production is ok, their flows are good, the melody so and so. OK

I like to hear this. But yea, I'm not about this whole recycling stalling shizzy. It only keeps the song in rotation.
