Twice recognized by local alternative weekly City Pages as the best R&B artists the Twin Cities have to offer, Minneapolis-based neo-soul octet The New Congress are preparing to take their game to the next level with the Oct. 27, release of sophomore album Anguish Love & Romance. The ensemble’s Booth debut and latest single, the LP’s title track, finds lead vocalist/guitarist Aaron “Orange” Cosgrove soulfully exploring the set’s titular themes over a laid-back guitar/bass groove accented by gauzy background vocals and subdued scratches (courtesy of DJ Dudley D). Halfway through, Talib Kweli steps up to the mic to give his take on the topic in a characteristically agile guest verse, opining that “There is no love without pain and anguish.” It should come as no surprise that TNC’s funky, spacey throwback sound (similar to that of Relax (Your Mind) singer Jason Caesar) has European listeners buzzing, but could they be too far ahead of the curve to find a niche in the American mainstream? As always, Booth listeners will have the final say.

Butter, skin, velvet - Few of the words used to describe how SMOOTH this here is. Every one on here has amazing vocals over this sexy, soulful beat. My fav track of the night. Originality, people. For the grown and sexy right here, damn!

Enough can't be said for how SICKK this song is. It's mellow in the best kind of way, and Talib Kweli comes with such intelligent lyrics. Man, this is my new jam. I really hope this group gets signed...

Damn!!! I don't usually get trapped in Regions/Coasts and all that sh*t but after Chi-Town, Twin Cities is wats up when it comes to feel GOOD music.

We've currently got two artist making great music on the site from Minneapolis (check the Brother Ali review). I'm starting to think the Twin Cities may just be the most underrated musical city in the U.S.

As far as Love, Pain, Anguish, just some classic R&B/soul from a group that knows how to do it. The New Congress is definitely on my radar now.

I second Nathan's feedback - Minneapolis is SO underrated . There is so much untapped talent just waiting to be discovered. Talib shines on his guest spot, but TNC take the cake.
