N*E*R*D - Hot N Fun
Artist: N*E*R*D
Featuring: Nelly Furtado
Producer: The Neptunes
Album: Nothing
Label: Star Trek/Interscope
Though fans have heard absolutely nothing from N.E.R.D. since 2008’s Seeing Sounds, that’s all set to change with the impending release of… uh… Nothing. See, because that’s actually the name of the LP. Anyway, the latest full-length from Pharrell, Chad and Shay is shaping up to be the perfect summer soundtrack, judging by aptly-named lead single Hot N’ Fun. Here, a hypnotic, bass-driven groove sure to get bodies moving pulses in the background as Pharrell proclaims “It’s a new day: people don’t wanna think no more, they just wanna feel. They wanna let go.” Tied together with a lushly melodic hook featuring the unmistakable vocal stylings of Nelly Furtado, this track sounds like it just might be a smash-hit in the making – what do you think, Booth readers? Those who agree can look forward to a whole lot ‘o’ Nothing come June 15, when N.E.R.D.‘s senior set hits online retailers and record stores everywhere.

Some people tell me that Pharrell is a musical genius. Other people tell me that he is one of the most annoying producers in the game today. I have a feeling that most people will align this record with a thought that falls somewhere between those two extremes. This is catchy, but not overly catchy. It appeals to a music-buying, radio-listening, club-going audience. Smart business decision if you ask me...

If you told me this was a neptunes beat i would tell you your crazy. Dont get me wrong its catchy but its seems to simple and a lil repetitive. I hope they still stick to their old sound on this new album/

I'm already envisioning how this is going to sound in my car. Pharrell's many talents never get old to me, so I'm excited to see what else the album will have to offer.
This will probably be a moderate success, but nothing that will get N.E.R.D. too much attention. |

Not quite as strong as N*E*R*D*'s previous efforts ("Lapdance" and "Spaz" is crazy live) but a decent single choice. The Nelly Furtado feature is sure to gain the track some plays. It's in rotation.

100% agree on Pharrell's 2sides... Its usually hit or miss from him for me. This isn't necessarily a miss, but it ain't a hit either

Nooooo..... this is exactly what everyone else is doing in the media, trying to please everyone. For some people, it gets boring. They kinda dissapointed, but the Neptunes' beat definitely worked in their favor.

Not one of N.E.R.D.s best efforts but I guess it has some main stream appeal. Going into the track I was hoping for something really special. That might have been a bad idea all things considering.
Nelly Furtado adds something to the track, just not sure what it is. The production is alright but again not what I was hoping for. Hopefully the will get back on their "Spazz" and "Everybody Nose" grind. |

I always go into a N.E.R.D produced instrumental with a bit of skepticism because I'm not really a fan of theirs. But I play the track hoping they will surprise me. But alas, they do not. i hear the same, generic, "catchy" simple beat with a popular guest feature. Very formulaic if you ask me. And i didn't really like the outro with Pharrell advertising his album at the end, very cheesy and amateurish for an artist of his stature.

I would have to admit that Neptunes production has slacked off a bit in the last year or 2, but I still anticipate anything Pharrell puts out and appreciate his work. I really liked this, and will be happy to hear it in the clubs. The beat has a sexy feel to it that will get people moving, and Nelly Furtado was a good choice for a feature.

Been waiting for a Pharrell produced song with Nelly Furtado. I knew it would only be a matter of time. Not digging this though, because I simply do not like Nelly on club tracks. Same ol' NERD to me, always a lot going on with the production. Nothing too great about this song. Nelly's feature would get some buzz though.

N.E.R.D. has never really been a group that has proven themselves, in my eyes. I do enjoy the occasional Pharrell, especially with the Clipse, but I'm not about to jump on his N.E.R.D. bandwagon. Very Generic and sounds really played out. I don't see this being the track that really enables them to shine outside of the clubs.

I'm sorry, I don't get why y'all don't like this song. This song is BANGING. It's five stars alone on production easily.

I definitely got an old Spice commercial feel from Pharrell's look at you look at me bit.
I would have loved to hear more from Nelly Furtado. I was primarily attracted to the song because of her feature. Sadly disappointed that Nelly didn't get more track play. It's overly apparent from everyone's responses just on the booth that N.E.R.D.'s music comes with high expectations. Luckily having made a name for themselves this is going to get automatic radio play but the longevity of the track on the charts is questionable. I'm torn. I feel like with a few more rotations it'll grow on me more and after a few more I'll be taking it off my ipod. I think for a "feel good let go" record Hot N' Fun the lyrics convey the message but I'm not sure the production or Pharrell's talking could even get me on the dance floor. By far my favorite part of this track is Nelly's short piece. I hope seeing them this Wednesday will give me a different feel about this song and Nothing in general. |

Agreed with most have said, its not a song that will stay in my personal rotation, though I can see it receive a good amount of plays on radio and in some clubs. Good feature choice, cant go wrong with Nelly Furtado

There is something about NERD that always catches my attention...they definately have a sound of their own.
I actually enjoyed this...the production and Nelly Furtado make this track special. Nelly Furtado always seems to make tracks better even when it's her own. Pharrell sometimes is a miss with me but on this one he did better then usual. I just really am digging this beat...maybe cause it sounds a little different then I'm use to hearing from the Neptunes! By the way whether you love or hate NERD...you should go check them out live...I saw them live way back on Kanye's Glow in the Dark Tour and they know how to put on a show for sure! |

If I'm after "feeling, and letting go" then this is right on. I suppose I'm not in the right mood for something so repetitive and simple.

OK. Has anyone else noticed the bass line is a similar rhythm to the bass in Michael jackson's "wanna be startin somethin"

a song ive been waiting for since 2008! NERD are back! ok a little disappointed with the beat... definitely sup-bar from the neptunes there. but pharrell never ceases to impress me with his mic-skills. nelly was alright i thought as were chad and shay. solid rotation, almost a banger- beat holds it back

It's unmistakeably a NERD beat although something is just missing that makes it the super catchy beats they use to make. Song will probably grow on me.

Count me in the "musical genius" crowd...This will be a HIT-MUCH more radio-friendly than "Everyone Nose" was.
Can't wait for the Abbot & Costello-style convo when I tell the clerk on June 15 that I want to cop "Nothing". |

The beat in this is somewhat original, but too bland. Never really been a fan of NERD, their rapping was subpar for me. Nelly Furtado sounded nice on the hook though.

Nelly Furtado is a perfect fit here. Doesn't seem like it will be too terribly popular anywhere but will have to do as a first single.

A well-crafted party jam filled with party-driven calls and light-hearted lyrics. Everything is set low, repetitive and simple which makes it easier to sing along. That being said, it lacks the overall charisma to stay in the rotation for a long period of time.

This wasn't bad, but not my thing. The beat was too repetitive and boring and could have been a little bit faster.

Pharrel is undoubtedly a musical genius. Saying that all his work is genius, is a whole different story.
Unfortunately, this isn't the case. The song is so monotonous! And what repeats throughout is not catchy enough, so what's the point? They simply didn't try. I'd take ANY song on their amazing last album (this single made go back to listening to it again and it feels as fresh as ever) over this.. |

I'm a bit biased when it comes to The Neptunes. To me for the most part they can do no wrong, this song definitely holds true to the Neptune style. It is a bit repetetive but I still like it because their music always brings out some kind of emotion. Like a painting. You look at a painting and get a feeling from it. Its the same for me with this song. I will say there are other Neptune productions that I like more than this, but I still would put this on the Ipod for listening during my workout.
