Nelly - Just a Dream
Artist: Nelly
Producer: Jim Jonsin
Album: Nelly 5.0
Label: Derrty/Universal Motown
Wouldn’t it be crazy if we all woke up tomorrow to find that we’re still living in Nelly‘s early-2000s glory days, and everything we thought had happened since then was, in reality, Just a Dream? Hey, anything’s possible! Well, OK, maybe not. Assuming we aren’t all trapped in the Matrix, the St. Louis native’s gonna need a hit or two to catapult him back to superstardom in the here and now. To that end, Nelly’s returned to our frontpage with another official single. In contrast to Tippin’ in the Club‘s hard-partying vibe, Dream has a poppier, but still dancefloor-ready sound; Jim Jonsin mans the boards, layering sugary synths and lite-rock guitar as Nelly shows off his softer side, lamenting his failure to patch things up with the girl he loved before it was too late. The pop appeal is most definitely there, but will this be track that returns the artist to his rightful place in the spotlight? That, my friends, is for you to decide. Either way, though, fans are gonna have to wait a little longer than previously expected for more new tunes – Nelly 5.0 has been delayed to a yet unspecified fall release.

Now THIS is the Nelly that radio will gobble up, girls will gobble up, and men will front like they don't like (when they do). Since I know that Nelly can actually rap his ass off, I don't prefer the pop version of him, but I understand this move.

Wow. I've gave up on Nelly's career and didn't think this song would be any good but man was I wrong. First of all nice production from Jim and though the verses were kind of forgettable, I can't deny that crazy hook. Damn it's still in my head. Nelly's career might of been resurrected.

Good for a radio-ready single. The production and hook are good and catchy enough to succeed on the charts. Nelly's lyrics could be better, but overall it's a step. I would love to see Nelly's career come back to life, as a St. Louis native I'm ready to support St. Louis hip-hop, especially those with genuine talent like Nelly.

oh sh!t...i cant even explain how excited i am right now. this may not be 5 stars (maybe it is im jus goin off one listen), but im gunna give it to him anyway. Nelly is one of my all time favs and this is part of the reason why... he reps St.Louis better than anyone else, he can be a sick rapper when he wants to be, and he can drop hits like this. i hope the upcoming album kills.
WELCOME BACK NELLY! |

you know..i root so hard for Nelly to make it back in hip hop. Z is right...radio will gobble this up. It's no different than the formula that B.o.B. has been doing and getting craaaazy radio spins.
best of luck Nelly |

I've never been a big Nelly fan, but this side of his duel lead single should do pretty well on the Pop charts.

This sounds like it was meant for B.o.B so in my books we have a hit, Nelly could of come harder but I see the reason for the slow tempo (radio/club friendly) Nice one Nelly.

It was all a dream, I used to...
Nelly's trying every possible angle to get back on the radio, the club hit, the banger and now the hip-pop hit. I have to say, his singing voice is actually pretty good. If he could convince Rihanna to jump on this it could be a huge, huge hit. Maybe this will gain some traction and 5.0 will get a release date. |

I can't even act like I don't like this, this is dope. It's definitely got that pop sound in it but that's necessary to get his sound out there. 5/5 for Nelly on this one, he's coming back.

This is the Nelly I love. It reminds me of the time he collaborated with a country music star. I really like this. I can't decide if it will get big on the radio with the whole B.o.B flow but if it does I will be very happy.

Its a pretty good track. While it is not the Nelly I prefer, i'll have to give this 3 stars. Simply because i know this will be hittin the radio, its pop.

Finally something from Nelly worth listening to and something that has replay value. This is refreshing. The production is smooth. The vocals are nearly perfect. This has a definite Nelly-sound to it and that is a good thing. There is no way this track will have the success that Hot In Here, Grillz, or Air Force Ones had but this is a smooth comeback track. I'm really feeling it.

Am I the only one listening or this is the same garbage that everyone is going for when it comes to sound. I am sorry but for me this doesn't cut it. It's that same old pop formula that everyone is using now and i don't appreciate it. Sure its a banger but for me its not original. That's what Nelly NEEDS to do in order to get his career back.

I swear, you can always count on the people who come to DJBOOTH.NET to listen to music to know GOOD music.
I was a Nelly fan way back in the day ("Country Grammar" was the first rap album I ever owned). I've continued to be a mild fan throughout his career; and was sad to see him fall off in the past couple years (if you remember back to like 2001, Nelly was what Drake is now...). But when I heard this, I'm thinking he just may make a more mature and triumphant comeback (something we've just recently witnessed from Eminem). Speaking of Eminem, was I was the only who peeped how this Nelly joint could be a double meaning; using "her" as being symbolic for a woman, but also the "hip-hop" or "music" game? (Similar to one of Eminem's newest records "25 to Life" on his RECOVERY album); especially with lines like "I was at the top, and now it's like I'm in the basement, #1 Spot, now she found a replacement." Either way, I dig it and I'm eager to see what Nelly comes with next... Sidebar: Jim Jonsin's production was pretty dope, but it sounded like a hybrid of Wyclef Jean's "Sweetest Girl" and Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie". LOL. Just sayin'... |
