In my book, one of the greatest perks of being in a relationship is the ability to stay in; rather than feeling compelled to fill every spare moment with activity, you can simply kick back and stay in bed till noon with that special someone. The downside, of course, is that when you do have responsibilities, it’s even harder to extricate yourself from that warm embrace. Just ask R&B heavyweight Ne-Yo who describes how his girl’s ”Lazy Love” has affected his work schedule on the latest single off his fifth studio album. Coming on the heels of hyperkinetic promo cut Burning Up, this record finds the pop hitmaker dialing back the intensity to tackle the languid side of romance; with frequent Frank Ocean collaborator Shea Taylor‘s languid piano production and understated, synth-fortified rhythm section as his canvas, the crooner soulfully, but ineffectually, protests against his girl’s efforts to keep him from heading downstairs to face the day. Feeling this understated bedroom burner? Then keep it locked for more freshl tunes leading up to the September 18, release of Ne-Yo’s R.E.D. LP.

This is a nice lane for Ne-Yo to drive down. Appeals to an older fanbase, still poppy enough to garner younger fans, too. I enjoyed this record.

The production by Shea Taylor is smooth and slightly muted, but in a good way. Ne-Yo delivers some smooth work over the beat and his new album should be pretty good. This is a bit too droopy for me though. I need something to cheer me up on this rainy day...

I really like this, much more than anything from Libra Scale. I used to buy all Ne-Yo's albums, ending with Year of the Gentlemen. This new album might revive the trend.

I still can't get over the fact that Ne-Yo is calling his new album "the R.E.D. album". Smh. However, this is a decent track. I don't particularly like the beat but Ne-Yo's vocals make this a good listen. His last album was very very underwhelming, so I'm hoping he gets back into zone for this one. 3.5 stars

Ne-Yo had better days, but I can accept this.
