Nappy Roots - Dippin & Dodgin
Artist: Nappy Roots
Featuring: STS
Producer: Blake [at Tree Sound]
Album: Unreleased
Label: Nappy Roots Ent Group
The Nappy Roots have been on something of a a Booth hot streak lately – judging by the reader response to mixtape cut P.O.N. (off SMKA‘s The 808 Experiment (Vol. 2)) and recently-released lead single Ride, the Kentucky quintet’s latest full-length will make 4/20 a good day for both the stoned and sober. In the meantime, the Southern heavyweights are back on our front page to tide fans over with a new, unreleased cut which finds Skinny Deville, Fish Scales, B. Stille, Big V and Ron Clutch Dippin’ & Dodgin’ alongside Philly/Atlanta dual representative STS (formerly known as Sugar Tongue Slim). Here, Tree Sound beatsmith Blake‘s funky keyboard-guitar sample sets the stage for verses that, though less focused than those the Nappy Roots delivered on their last couple features, come packed with enough agile braggadocio to please discerning lyrical heads. Will D&D be another entry in the group’s DJBooth hit parade? That’s for you to decide. In any case, readers who like what they’re hearing should remember to take a detour to the record store and grab their own copies of Pursuit of Nappyness while out on the all-important 4/20 snack run.

im a pretty big roots fan since a little kid,, and this is pretty nice, and low key...not one of their classic sounds but hey not bad...flow is cool...they should have had a hook on here instead of the sample sounding but still the verses are nice...at times i was like why they put that effect in their i dont think that fit but its cool...i know in a few weeks roots is going to blow us away with another po folks...thats was my shit and thats real talk rather you like me or not i keep it real

Glad this didn't make the final cut for the new album, but its still enjoyable. Not sure STS meshes well with this production.

Likes it, but something sounds a little off to me, like the flows are just a beat behind the production. If they could have smoothed this out a bit I think we could have had a jam.

yeah im hearing you about the flow vs prdouction nathan, puts me off. the hook was too repetitive for me, sometimes it works, sometimes not and this was one of those times.

I agree with you Z this probably should not make the album more of a mixtape feel. I do enjoy it though and have always been a huge fan of Nappy Roots since Chicken, Watermelon, and Grits.

This is a MAJOR disappointment to me considering the quality of their last two FEATURES.
