To emphasize just how long Murphy Lee‘s upcoming sophomore album (previously titled The Package and Who Says St. Louis Ain’t Hip-Hop, but now called You See Me) has been in the works, the promo single, Dat Bull Ish, was one of DJBooth’s first song features in early ‘06. Regardless, with an August release date finally set and the official single, Murph Derty, at retailers this week, a follow-up single has hit the DJBooth. Following the Derrty Ent. tradition of product promo singles (Air Force Ones, Grillz, Stepped On My J’z), Shoes is all about Lee’s infatuation with pricey car rims (see Rich Boy’s Throw Some D’s). Despite competitor sites’ claims that Shoes features T-Pain, Murphy is merely having some vocoder-assisted fun, without everyone’s favorite nappy boy.
At this point in time, I would have thought that Murphy Lee would have been a major player in the South Hip Hop game; but the game is funny like that now-a-days. This is a nice track that could get major spins on a radio station. I think he makes even better tracks than this; but this can go into rotation. Its a little too commercial feeling for me to give it a higher rating. Still a solid Radio Banger.
MAN! The hook is nice and catchy. Murphy Lee sounds good on the hook and even though he's using the vocoder, it doesn't sound like he did. This production is real nice. I'm a long-time fan of Murphy Lee ever since "Make U Love Me Baby" came out about 4 years ago. This is definitely a solid track! I'ma go ahead and not be stingy and give this a 5.
I will say I just heard him spit the second verse and what not on Rap City a few weeks ago with Nelly and Consequence..which is actually is the reason Murphy has been on my radar lately
This is going to get just as much airplay as some of Nelly's hits here in the midwest..more specifically here in Missouri. But I'm not feeling this song that much. Its a decent song but something on the song is throwing it off for me. Its in the rotation for me
i agree with blaze, it actually has been a really long time since i heard from murph, years ago i thought he could have been huge like nelly, but it seems like on his hiatus his flow hasnt got worse, but hasnt gotten better..........this song is catchy and the production is nice, it somethin bout this song that i really like, it definetly in rotaion, 3.5
Aye dude on the hook is named Kanjia. He was signed with Basement Beats...might still be...but yeah real talk, being from STL, I was glad to hear this song from Murph. It sounds good on the radio and it's good in the clubs...
Beat is solid, definitely club/summer jam, feel good track right here. The topic is a little corny (comparing shoes to rims on his car), but the hook sounds good. Lyrically its decent for Murph. Been awhile since I heard him, it seems like forever, when we last heard "Wat Da Hook Gon Be".
3.5 (4 stars on the site). Big-A, you'll be surprised about the things people have done songs on. Shoes is small compared to some of the crazy things they've done songs on! Shoes seem to be growing on everyone's shopping list when it comes to rappers now, though.
Ok, can we all agree now that ANYONE CAN SING with the voicebox (well, except Lil Kim)?! Thus, T-Pain is not that talented (as for the singing, at least)! Murphy Lee sounds BETTER than him with it (not annoying at all), and that says a lot. And that (plus a CATCHY melody) makes the chorus! And the song! And me, voting for the first time as higher for a song about… shoes! This proves the problem is not the subject matter nor the tools you use, but rather HOW you use it! NICE job with the production (every sound feature is effective)!
I definately knew it wasn't T-Pain after my first full listen to the song but he came pretty close and not a bad job! anyway I wasn't really feeling the song but the hook would have to be the highlight
Adam.
If I hear another cat forn the lu talkin bout his dan shoes, I'ma kick somethin!!!!! This song is ok aside fron what he talkin bout. I'd spinn this becaus the production is good. P.S. I am aware that he's talkin bout RIMS just incase ya'll wondering. Thats aside form the problem. I just want someone outta there to come with some depth. I know they got some. But all you hear is just shallow stuff. I want a new side of the SHOWME STATE!
take a look at my shoes iz wut all da boiz say @ my school so DIS wud b a perfect song 4 them. I think DIS song iz kool- but it aint my fav- it's in rotation.
It's OK. I don't really like Murphy Lee's style or the message in his songs. He really misses the mark for me with the singing, too. It's okay...I don't know if it's a hit, though.
