DJBooth newcomer Mr. J. Mederios would be Nothing Without Providence. Without the city’s delicious seafood and burgeoning art scene the rapper/producer would be at a complete loss. Wait, the L.A. based producer/rapper/singer’s speaking about providence as in the foreseeing care and guidance of god or nature over the creatures of the earth, not the Rhode Island capital? Well that makes much more sense then. True to its deeply metaphorical title, the new single is expansive in its scope, beginning with The Stare’s eclectic beat, which somehow manages to merge piano lines, distorted synths and minimal percussion into a cohesive product. On the mic Mederios more than matches the beat’s range, laying down deeply worded lines and an intensely personal chorus. You may love it, you may hate it, but I guarantee you haven’t heard anything like it before (name the last time you heard a track ending with minute long instrumental and a voicemail message). Those finding themselves intrigued by Medeiros’ unique musical vision will definitely want to check out his upcoming album Saudade, out June 14.

Nathan is right (see above), there isn't going to be very many people who are on the fence about Mr. J. Medeiros. You will probably either love or hate this song. At first, I didn't like it. Felt like he was pressing and trying to hard to execute. Then I listened again (and again) and realized that it was his style... and I dig it. Not necessarily a repeat listen, but enough to stand on its own in a sea of hip hop mediocrity.

So... longtime reader, but just registered to say that I'm appalled! My suspicions confirmed, Mr. J Medeiros hasn't been on the Booth before. How can you sleep on J or his old group, The Procussions? They were kicking on Rawkus back when Black Star was first coming out and got some of the most sickfit guest verses out of Kweli. As far as this track, its par for the course as far as Medeiros's evolution as a solo artist. Not his best, not his worst. He tends to be divisive, either coming off as an effortless soul-bearer or a parable writer who is trying a little too hard. I'm sticking with #1 for now, but that might change with a few listens...

Mr. J. Medeiros really killed this beat! Great example of a simple beat that just has that extra something. I agree that this is a love or hate situation with this song, but by the second listen I'm sure you'll be won over. Taking one dose of this track will cause uncontrolled head-nodding!

This is just ok. It's different and unique, and for that I give him props, but it still seems a little forced and all over the place. At times, I swore I heard the lead signer from Rage Against The Machine, mainly in the second verse. I like the production, the beat changes alot and keeps you interested. I dont hate it, but its not my favorite.
