Moxie Black - So Much Better
Producer: Dekk
Album: How Did This Happen?
Label: Spread Label/iLLa Baby
In this post-Rebirth music game, it takes some serious cojones to release a record featuring Auto-Tuned singing over driving rock guitar. On their latest mixtape single, emcee-producer duo Moxie Black follow that risky recipe – and the result is… well… So Much Better. Over a dry and concise groove that could’ve come straight out of an early Strokes joint (courtesy of Dekk), rapper Illaj recounts the devastating emotional effects (and liquor-soaked aftermath) of seeing his girl at the spot with another fella. Though this story’s one we’ve all heard before (heck, some unlucky readers may even have experienced it firsthand), the tune itself is one of the catchiest I’ve heard in a minute, and those backing “da-da-da”s on the hook push it into “damned near irresistible” territory. What do you think, Booth readers? If you’ve become a fan, stay tuned; we’ll be bringing you another leaked cut and an exclusive “In the Mix” interview in the lead-up to the August 18, arrival of Moxie Black’s latest street album, the DJBooth-sponsored How Did This Happen?

Let me put it like this: Moxie Black is so unbelievably refreshing that the only way not to enjoy their fun, upbeat, urban/electro/pop sound is to simply not listen. Of course, then you wouldn't know what you're missing.
Add this duo to a growing list of refreshing new duos/groups that includes Chiddy Bang, AudioDax, Rich Kid Sound System, and Bad Rabbits. Ladies and gentlemen, the future sounds on your radio. |

I am definitely feeling the upbeat, catchy electrorockpop vibe on the track. I like the electroguitar riff throughout the track.

Singing in a bottle of Vodka? That part of the chorus and the crazy guitar riff stand out the most to me. Add Christian Rich to that list as well Z. Very REFRESHING music indeed.

This is hipster rock without anything that annoys me about hipsters, and rap rock without anything that annoys me about rap rock.
In other words, they're creating their own lane, and it sounds pretty damn good. |

@PlanB - You are right, I totally blanked on mentioning Christian Rich. Anyone who merges multiples genres/sounds and makes it sound original and not forced is on my radar.

The guitars are great here. The song could just use some more interesting chord progressions.
