Mook N Fair - Who's Your Daddy (West Coast Remix)
Artist: Mook N Fair
Featuring: Nipsey Hussle
Producer: J. Stone
Album: The Secret's Out
Label: GS Entertainment/Brooklyn Knights
Featured this past June, Mook N Fair‘s Who’s Your Daddy earned an impressive 3.75-star average from our readers. That kind of greatness is damned hard to improve upon but, with this newly-released West Coast Remix, they may just have topped themselves. Everything that made the original a Booth smash is retained, from the Conn. duo’s bankroll-flaunting verses and sung interludes to J. Stone‘s banging boardwork, sampled from the Zombies’ Time of the Season, but DJ Webstar‘s been switched out for reader favorite Nipsey Hussle. It’s no surprise that the West Coast revivalist shines on the guest verse tip, but his bars are head-turning nonetheless – he blazes the track without breaking a sweat, dialing up the momentum with a flow that just plain fits. Is the Slauson Boy’s contribution the tweak this cut needed to graduate from “really good” to “great?” You be the jury. Fans of either version should keep it locked to the Booth for the latest on Mook N Fair’s The Secret’s Out LP, which has yet to receive a release date from the label brass.

Before I judge this song, let you tell about another remix I played on Anime Radio last June. Webstar was still in the end, but the version I had featured Pocos Pero Locos affiliate Big Gemini. He and Webstar kept the song's energy alive - from Gemini's loud raspy tone to Webstar's call out hook - and to me, their appearance helped Mook-N-Fair get their share on the spotlight, which allowed me to take interest into playing their song on my podcast. Nipsey's verse was good, but he didn't deliver much to my dismay. Sometimes, lyrics aren't enough - you gotta have to have that voice, that style, that tone to get one's person into digging it.
Sorry, guys, I'm afraid I'll have to give it a two. |

Even though Nipsey's rap verse fits in like a glove, still, its the sample-driven production which is the real star of this joint. Same rating for this new-and-improved version ... BANGER!!!

The original was a hit record and nothing changes with Nipsey aboard.
Sidebar: Whats the over/under on how many more times this year this sample will be used? |

@DJ Z The over-under? With three months left in the year, if I set the line at 6 what would you take? It is a damn good sample.

I hate to say it but I missed DJ Webstar's voice on this. Nipsey didn't really add much to the song. Irregardless, the production is the star of this song.
