If you make a list of every successful female rapper (who also happens to produce records), the total number of artists that list should read is ‘1.’ And of course, that numero uno equals Missy Elliot. On Tuesday, the soundtrack to Step Up 2: The Streets will land in stores. The compilation, which features various artists from all of WMG’s labels, is highlighted by two brand new Missy Elliot songs. They include the previously heard Ching-A-Ling and the newly released, Shake Your Pom Pom. Co-produced by Elliot and longtime collaborator, Timbaland, the big-band sound is catchy and should get the wheels spinning for a creative music video. Missy will release her 7th studio album in late spring off Atlantic Records.
Beat starts off strong (in typical timba fashion), though it feels like it loses a bit of steam towards this end... I don't know, it just doesn't have as much impact as her ching-a-ling song. These 2 recent missy singles really aren't up to snuff in terms of missy standards...what happened?
Honestly...I don't know what Missy is up to lately, but I don't really like it. I like her older style that was weird and kooky. That suited her the best. Now everything she does has such a huge "old-school" feel to it that its getting played out. I kind of like the beat and its not all bad, but its not something I would want to hear on the radio all day!
I want some old school Missy and Tim. This is an alright production for a new comer in the game but not pioneers--perhaps they are trying something different.
