Mikkey Halsted - Runnin' My City
Artist: Mikkey Halsted
Featuring: Bun B , Killer Mike , Crooked I , King Chip
Producer: SC
Label: Uncrowned City/Rich Kidz Ent.
Only rappers seem to feel the need to rep for their city; you never hear Jason Mraz throwing down for Mechanicsville, Virginia. But whatever the roots of this geographic hip-hop phenomenon, Mikkey Halsted’s here with a prime example of the species on album standout Runnin’ My City. Arpeggiated synths dance over producer SC’s thumping drums as Mikkey, Bun B, Killer Mike, Crooked I, Chip Tha Ripper, Mistah F.A.B. and Gillie Da Kid celebrate themselves as the frontman in their cities. Mikkey and Bun B start the song off with some serious energy, intimidating the haters with lines like, “If I bark on the boulevard, cars start skidding.” After Bun, though, the song starts losing momentum with just merely above-average flows from the remaining five rappers. For such a huge posse cut, I was hoping for some more life to be breathed into this one. Or maybe I’m the only one not inspired to go hit the streets of my city. As always, we’ll leave it up to the Booth to decide. Those enjoying Runnin should go cop Mikkey’s much anticipated album The Dark Room, dropping December 21.

This record shows you the respect that emcees across the country, big and small, share for Mikkey. It is also a nice representation of talents from across every region (Midwest, Dirty South, Northeast and West Coast). However, there are simply too many emcees on this posse cut.
I would have axed Gillie (who should have asked Young Chris for a spot on his "Philly Sh*t" remix) and Mistah F.A.B. But that is just me... what do you all think? |

I dunno, I've had this guys mixtape from this site on my ipod for months and everytime it comes up none of the songs really grab me. He's never really made me want to listen to him. This song is pretty sick though and I think Mikkey drops better on this then I've heard him.

Definitely one of Mikkey's best to date. The production is hot but doesn't overshadow the emcees. Hopefully he can start coming out with more material like this.

It seems like everyone is doing the same thing..... Get a bunch of people on a record and have them kill their verses. All to a simple boring, high pace beat.
