Mikkey Halsted - I'm the Man
Artist: Mikkey Halsted
Featuring: Sly Polaroid
Producer: SC
Album: The Best You Never Heard Mixtape
Label: Uncrowned City/Rich Kidz Ent.
With the release of his DJBooth-sponsored Best You Never Heard mixtape, underground mainstay Mikkey Halsted intends to bring the uninitiated up to speed on what he’s all about. Lesson one in the Windy City emcee’s crash course comes in the form of inaugural leak I’m the Man, which finds Halsted emphasizing the fact that well, he’s the man – and, consequently, you’re not. Accompanied by producer SC‘s subdued blend of chopped vocal samples and harpsichord (looks like the harpsichord comeback I predicted over on RefinedHype is already underway!), Halsted backs up his assertion, delivering bars brimming with heavily-alliterated braggadocio: “N*ggas took exception when I called myself sire, but they sat back and watched me set the city on fire.” On the middle and final verses, fellow Chi-town natives Sly Polaroid (previously heard on Ben One‘s Never Leave My Side (Remix)) and Cloak Hancock step up to the mic, each making a convincing case for his own status as “The Man.” For more “hard sh*t” from Mikkey and his cohorts, download a copy of BYNH when it hits the Booth this Thursday.

The world needs to stop sleeping on Mikkey. I hope if people give this new mixtape a chance - drops this Thursday - they will pleasantly surprised. Only complaint here is that Mik didn't take two full verses.

Mikkey did this track recently with Freddie Gibbs (name escapes me) that completely convinced he's the real deal. Every since then I've been a Mikkey backer, and this is more evidence why.

Lyrically, bravado wordplay is the order of the day, but the beat though not bad, just fails to excite and get your head nodding. 2.5

This is good all around, but it is
missing something to elevate it to great. Nice rhymes, nice beat but it just fails to draw you in or retain your attention. |

On the "My Chick Bad" feature, I said Luda missed a big opportunity by kicking Shawnna off there...This is living proof.
Z said the world needs to stop sleeping on Mikkey, and I couldn't agree more. However, I extend his statement towards Sly Polaroid and Cloak Hancock. Hoping to hear more from all three in the future! |

Can't even front and sleep on this joint, lyrical caffine. Another case of the deserving artists stuck on the underground railroad unless ya'll stop rotating the obvious and start spinning the truth
