Mikkey Halsted - First Class
Artist: Mikkey Halsted
Producer: Prolyfic
Album: DarkRoom LP
Label: Uncrowned City/Rich Kidz Ent.
The history of Chicago is the history of overcoming difficulty to achieve greatness. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 burned the city to the ground, but from those ashes it emerged as one of the greatest cities in the U.S., and Chi-Town emcee Mikkey Halsted’s career echoes his native city’s history. Previously signed to Cash Money and Virgin Records at various times, Mikkey is now continuing to build his career with his own two hands on new single First Class. With quick, snapping drums and eerie strings courtesy of aptly-named producer Prolyfic, Mikkey lets his boast-filled verses fly high, letting his competitors know that he’s simply on a different level, or better yet, being served champagne in First Class while the rest are scavenging for peanuts back in coach: “Mikkey’s getting a massage…you’re in between two fat dudes and they won’t even give you a pillow.” Halsted will come one step closer in his quest to truly join Chicago’s elite hip-hop ranks when his upcoming album DarkRoom drops October 26. Will you be on flying with him on First Class?

It takes a little too long to get into the actual song (the extended intro can be a gift or a curse for artists, here it was the later), and I'm not a huge fan of the production, but Halsted is a beast on the mic. Hailing from Chicago myself, I can say with certainty he is one of the most talented artists we have today. He just needs to be heard.

It's hard to come back from such a weak first verse. The wordplay frequently missed. The lines reminded me of something Wayne would spit, unfortunately Mikkey doesn't have the millions of blind/ignorant supporters to hype him up.

When I think of the word "First Class," I think of glamorous and extravagant everything. This track just happened to be the complete opposite of what first class really exemplifies. Rhymes were overall decent, but at the same time, nothing amazing. Heard rappers preach about being the best multiple times. Mikkey is a liar.

I can't front, I'd consider myself a Mikkey fan, but I prefer him much more street oriented than this kind of electo-swag sound. This sounds too much like everything else out there.
But if this is the kind of music it takes for him to fly first class, I can't hate. |

This is one of those songs that seems to be made to impress or 'fit it'. The honesty is missing in my opinion. Not gonna rate.

Mikkey feels so out of place on this swag track. how can someone boast so much if they haven't made it?
