On July 8, NASA launched manned shuttle Atlantis for the very last time, marking the end of its Space Shuttle program. Which means that, for the foreseeable future, anyone hoping to fulfill his or her dream of exploring the cosmos will have to save up 20-35 million big ones and hitch a ride on a Russian craft. For those who don’t have the scratch, Mike Posner recaptures a little of the fear and excitement of space travel with his rendition of Sir Elton John’s Rocket Man, a single released in the final years of NASA’s groundbreaking Apollo program. The latest leak off the Duke University grad’s highly-anticipated forthcoming mixtape, this hazy cover finds Posner trading the pop icon’s light-rock backdrop for an atmospheric blend of swirling synth arpeggios, keybass blurts and reverb-drenched percussion as he delivers his raspy rendition of the record’s verses. Riding shotgun—do rockets even have a shotgun seat?—UGK lifer Bun B emphasizes the psychological side of the song, using the heavens as a metaphor for the distance between himself and his woman. So, has Posner done his source material justice? If you approve, more innovative pop goodness awaits on his DJ Benzi-hosted The Layover mixtape, dropping Nov. 20.

I respect Mike's work, I am a fan of Mike's work, and you'll never ever hear me say anything bad about Bun B. But Posner is no Elton John. And I cannot listen to this song without thinking, "Man, this doesn't do the original justice." (Granted, I understand that is a pretty tall order when Elton John is the one being compared to.)

I am feeling this track. I agree with Z that Mike is no Elton John, but I think he does a good job on making it sound like his style. Plus, Bun B's flow is great.

Mike's music is really good, and his take on Elton Johns Rocket Man is just as good as the Original version, I am definitely going to add this to my ipod.

Song is cool... I think it would've been better if Mike put more emotion into it.

This will never be as good as the original, but I kinda liked it. I enjoyed this production and the flow. Bun B just adds to the track. 3.5 out of 5.

Production is beastly but I agree, Posner just didn't seem to put everything into this.
