Mike Dreams - Wave to 'Em
Artist: Mike Dreams
Producer: Beatnick & K-Salaam
Album: Just Waking Up
Label: MUSIC2DREAM2
Ever-grinding up-and-comer Mike Dreams may have a long and arduous journey ahead of him, but doubters who think they can break his stride are in for a rude awakening – as he explains on leak numero dos off his sophomore set, “I ain’t gonna wait for ‘em, I’ll just Wave to ‘Em.” Making its world premiere here in the Booth, this joint finds my Minneapolis neighbor trading the ambivalence of lead single Any Day Now for nose-to-the-grindstone determination. Over the wistful, soul-sampled boardwork of Twin Cities-bred production duo K-Salaam & Beatnick, the freestyle series alumnus reaffirms his intent to succeed in the game without compromising his vision, along the way showing off his finely-honed punchline game: “ I plan well – labels better play their hands well, or you can tell ‘em that it’s No Deal… Howie Mandel.” Complete with hook/backing vocals by Toyebi Adedipe and the kids of the Northside Minne-ap YMCA’s Beacon Program (which Mike is a part of), this joint and much more will be found on Dreams’ DJBooth.net/FlüD Watches-presented Just Waking Up LP, which hits our mixtape page for free streaming and download Oct. 14.

Beatnick & K-Salaam shine on this track. Simple but effective beat that allows Dreams to do his thing.

Damn, Mike is picking up Salaam & Beatnik beats now? The kid's really coming up, and he responds with some of the better flows I've heard from the man in a minute. This is that quality, feel good music I expect from a man named Dreams. Props.

Damn, much better than his last feature. Dreams did his thing, but the production was one of my aspects of the track. I didn't like the hook too much. I think the La-La-La was a bit excessive. Still, Dreams killed it.

Another classic track in my opinion.
Mike really takes the time to find the right beats to compliment his lyrics. Beatnick & K-Salaam really came through with this production. Positive and real lyrics. |

Very nice and chill beat. I feel like the vocals should be different. But its not bad at all.

Chorus and beat make this a nice listen. Liked Mike's flow at parts, too. However, "Dreams" continues to spit around the same tiring theme: you know, the "can't wait till I make it; gonna prove you wrong; it's gonna happen any day now, really; all of these labels better beware. Please. Stop rapping about it, be about it. Be an artist for the sake of being an artist, not to get to point X.
Besides, "Dreams" is not NEARLY as talented as most of the up and coming rappers out there. If the folks at The Booth think so, I smell a consistency bias. |
