Featured in late June, Mike BeatzCrooks met a mixed reception in the Booth; though readers praised the established producer’s street-certified boardwork, many doubted if he could cut it on the mic. Now, Beatz is back on our frontpage with mixtape single 50/50, a track he’s hoping will turn the skeptics into devotees. This time around, the artist takes a decidedly different approach on the mic and behind the boards. Over his own string-heavy, soul-sampled boardwork, Mike expresses gratitude to a female who’s held him down through thick and thin, promising to do the same for her once his grind finally pays off. The theme’s an undeniably fresh one – when’s the last time you heard a guy spit about being financially supported by his girl? – and Beatz’ heartfelt rhymes may change a few minds regarding his prospects as an emcee. If this track’s got you hooked, you’re sure to find more to your liking on Mike Beatz’ DJ Absolut-hosted I’m Thirsty mixtape, set to hit the ‘net this October.

I've heard of Mike Beatz here and there recently, haven't listened to much of him - but this was tight. Very unique and powerful production here, I LOVED the way this one played out. The female sample was tight here, and Beatz is a talented rapper who definitely shined over the production.

The best part about a track like 50/50, which is performed and produced by the same human being, is that we can easily (and rightfully) decide which skill is more impressive. While Beatz holds his own on the mic, I cannot help but wonder what another (more talented) emcee could have done over this simply dope production work.

Female vocals were great. Hook in general was nice. Mike Beatz can seriously produce. Yeah the beat and the hook make the track for the most part but he's solid on the mic as well. Impressed.

For everyone saying they'd like to see another rapper over this dope production, who? Personally, this reminds me of some 9th Wonder ish: put Phonte and Big Pooh on the track and it's a classic. I'll definitely keep an ear out for Mike Beatz in the future.

Ever since I first got with the crew, it seems like the "Mike"s are taking over the Booth! Mike Bigga (formerly Killer Mike) has of course been an industry mainstay, while Mike Dreams is ready to make his move, plus Mikey Factz got the underground on lock, and now this classic...

Hopefully a certain Houstonian can step his game back up to his underground roots and join the club. (Who? You know.)
