Mickey Factz - Get By
Artist: Mickey Factz
Featuring: Big K.R.I.T
Producer: Big K.R.I.T.
Album: I'm Better Than You
Label: GFCnewyork/Battery Records
As DJBooth Freestyle alum Mickey Factz prepares to release his seventh mixtape, the boldly titled, I’m Better Than You, he gives us a little taste of what we can expect with new leak Get By. Featuring Big K.R.I.T. on production, Mickey hopes to continue his path to Paradise by dong much more than simply getting by. Starting with Krizza’s beat, we get that old school ‘80s drum kick with a little touch of modern synths and topped off with a MLK speech sample. That soulful yet head banging sound showcases why so many people love K.R.I.T.’s work behind the boards, but is it too much for Mickey to handle? No. Coming out with lyrical fire to match the en fuego beat, from the first bar Mickey lets us know he’s not playing, spitting about some of the hate he’s heard since he started creating music and with lines like, “I did a commercial and I’m a sell-out?” Is Mickey truly better than your favorite rapper? We’ll find out for sure when the I’m Better Than You mixtape drops on September 27.

Solid, but not spectacular. Factz reminds us of his arrogance and perceived hatred, as K.R.I.T. follows his "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" production methods. If you are a fan of either, or both, you should enjoy.

I know I'm part of .01% of the population who cares about things like this, but that Martin Luther King sample is from a sermon about how the individual pursuit of success is destroying America. So to use it on a track entirely about the individual pursuit of success is not just ironic, but borderline disrespectful in my opinion.
Whether Mickey did it on purpose or simply didn't take the time to learn about the sample on his own song I don't know, but either way, it ruins the record for me. Shame, because otherwise it's a quality piece of hip-hop. |
