When Michael Jackson tragically died this summer, at first it looked like an enormous loss not only for music lovers everywhere, but all the companies that were banking on his upcoming 50 show tour. Lucky for their wallets, they’re now spinning the coverage they got of MJ’s rehearsals and in the studio into a worldwide marketing blitz, starting with the unreleased track This Is It. Released at midnight last night, This Is It is an orchestral piece that shows that even after all these years MJ could still rock his breathy, pop-magic as hard as his Off the Wall days. It’s good to hear Michael one more time, but This Is It won’t be going down as one of his best tracks, or even one of his top 25 tracks. Anyone disagree? You can hear more posthumously released material when the This Is It soundtrack is released on October 27, followed closely by a movie of the same title, and some t-shirts, and some commemorative plates, and anything else they can think of to cash in on the King of Pop’s legacy.

This was a great record. It was almost tear-jerking to listen to this. I liked the direction this record was taking. It definitely sounded like some throwback Michael Jackson and I wish we could have seen him make his comeback. Something tells me that it would have been HUGE and it would have let some of us younger people relive the excitement that he brought in the 80s, where people was passing out and everything. Though that will never happen now, I still can dream about it and this track is the perfect backdrop.
Don't be stupid tonight...this is 5 stars and y'all better give it 5 stars (Sorry to sound so harsh!) Please? Thanks! |

 I didn't like when they did (and still do) this to Pac and I object to it once again with Michael. His production work here is beautiful and the Jackson brothers harmony work in the end is tasteful. However, this song was left off the Dangerous album for a reason... because it wasn't as good as the rest of the project. Is it still better than 95% of the work that other artists could create? Of course. But, Michael was the best of ALL TIME. Thus, his bar is unbelievably high.
I'll rotate it because its one of my favorite artists, but the song just doesn't do it for me. Sonically, emotionally, or otherwise. Oh, and please feel free to disagree with me!

Anything MJ makes is classic, he puts so much work into every song. A musical genious that will be missed. Who killed him? The media and everyone who made fun of him on tv. No diss Nathan S. but wernt you dissing michael jackson alot before he died? I remember that. Stuff like that wasnt koo. Now that hes dead everyone wants to be a fan. Only if he had this love when he was alive. GOD bless you Michael Joseph Jackson. ANd thank you for your beautiful music. ANd i have to disagree with michael, this is not it. We are gonna hear alot more from him in the future.

Oh and Z i agree! 100 percent! but you know why they brung this song back to life? it was because of marketing and blah blah blah you know how it goes. Hopefully they release the originals of all of his music and dont bust a pac on us and change the original arrangements

im going to have to disagree with some of the statements ive seen. im not going to rate this song because MJ is a legend. Nor will i rate this classic becuz he passed away. However, This is actually a pretty decent song that DOES deserve a 4 star minimum.

Here's my take on this whole thing. There's no doubting that MJ was a legend and one of the best musicians ever (certainly the best pop artist), but I don't think that people should be giving this an automatic classic rating just because he died. This is definitely not one of his best but it's still pretty damn good. Beautiful production and I love his voice on here. So I'm gonna give this 4 stars.

I have nothing but respect for MJ, even though I am sick of hearing his music, they waited til he died to wear him out! But this was a breath of fresh air, something new yet classic sounding, I love it!

Oh, it was recorded in 1983? What was Z talking about with the Dangerous album. That album came out in 1991. Why would this song have been considered for an album 8 years later?
No wonder it sounds like some throwback Michael. This is from the THRILLER era! This is even better then. Y'all are tripping. If this had of came out back then, y'all would have rated it a classic. There's nothing different just because it's out now in 2009 and he's passed. It's a classic either way in my opinion. |

I think it sounds like a mastered demo version. His vocals aren’t quite proper for a perfectionist MJ was, which is why we hear sloppiness between his vocals and the background… they’re “produced” a bit more.
I think if this song was finished, it would be great. That being said, its absolute greatness to hear a never before heard track by Michael Jackson, I like that there’s more of a classic sound to it. R.I.P. |

@Mike Dreams and @dannyw: The CNN article, which correctly indicates when the record was recorded, was filed and published late last night. When "This Is It" was released to the net on Monday morning, it was accompanied by information that stated the record was from his "Dangerous" sessions. Regardless, either way you look at it the song itself is very very old.

Awesome. I love it. I haven't heard something like this from him since his early 90's stuff. The album he brought out in '01 was a huge let down. It's a shame he can no longer do more. R.I.P.

Somethin about the melody really sat well wit me, and kinda got stuck in my head. The production is beautiful, and the change that is made right as MJ says "this is it" works well. I love when the funk guitar is sprinkled in. I won't downgrade this for it not bein his best, cuz it is still a banger.

Mike Dreams five star rating (and others) is a perfect example of nostalgia in action. Objectively, this track just isn't that good. I can't believe any serious MJ fan would even dream of putting it in their top ten. But on a purely symbolic level, as the first cut we've heard from him since his death, it's amazing. With all due respect, if MJ were still alive and he released this, the reaction would be lukewarm at best. RIP Michael. The music industry owes you everything.

I had to come out of retirement for this one!
This track is HOT! Not just because MJ died, but its a sick song. His bridge, the chorus, the verses are all excellent. This is classic Mike $hit right here. I would have liked it more if he really got crazy with it at the end, but this will do just fine. EASILY A BANGER!

@Z nah I see what you saying but as a separate song it's still great. But that is unfortunate but companies still want to make money and not waste any sessions so they ride it til the wheels fall of so music will prolly continue to come from Michael along with a bunch of other stuff from his estate.
