Michael Charles - Deleted Memories [Premiere]
Producer: Black the Beast
Album: Breaking Ground EP
Label: Unsigned
As tempting as it might be to give myself the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind treatment after a nasty breakup, I’m pretty sure I couldn’t go through with it. The whole “brainwashing” thing just gives me the creeps. Jersey singer Michael Charles, on the other hand, just might take the plunge – on new single Deleted Memories (making its world premiere right here in the Booth!), the first-time featuree addresses an ex for one last time before pressing that (figurative) button and putting it all behind him. Over Black the Beast‘s unconventional instrumental, a densely-layered casserole of synths, piano and hypnotic guitar riffs, the singer explains exactly why he’s had it with the girl in question, and states his intent to make a clean break with the past. While Charles’ lyrics’ have a tendency to get buried under the production, I have a feeling the girl to whom this is addressed will get the picture. If you like what you’re hearing, keep it locked for details on the singer’s Breaking Ground EP, which has yet to receive a solid release date.

I met Michael last week in New York and he promised that within a week I'd have an inbox full of brand new tunes. Obviously, since you are reading this feature, the man kept his promise (and we are super psyched that he did).
Musically, there is a lot going on here. Most of it I like and some of it I don't. As Richard mentioned, at times Michael's vocals are slightly drowned out by the overpowering production behind him. Despite this minor misstep, his vocals are somewhat infectious and his ability to smoothly ride the beat makes repeat listens a possibility. Expect much much more from Mr. Charles in the weeks and months to come. |

I'm having a hard time understanding the words. The production was good. If the vocals where recorded and mixed better, it would be more enjoyable.

Looking past the mix, yah it's bad, there is definitely some talent displayed on this. Why do I think Timothy on the production? I'll be on the lookout for some more material from Mr. Charles.

That's a great call by PlanB - yeah, I could totally see Timbo doing this beat. A song like this is all about introducing you to an artist, and getting you excited to hear his other work, and this track succeeds on both levels. As folks have alluded to, it's not perfect, but it shows Charles has some real talent. I'm down for more, and it seems like everyone else is as well.

Solid effort by Charles. The production was close to drowning him out though.

I feel Mr. Charles vocal performance was hindered by the over powering production.
